Panda Express turns gaming into an always

Panda Express is starting to treat Roblox and Fortnite less like places for one-off stunts and more like worlds people can return to. That matters because gaming culture rewards continuity: players notice when a world changes, when a familiar space gets updated and when there is a reason to come back.

The shift was detailed in a release from Super League, which says the QSR has moved from short-term tests into a standing cross-platform presence. The important change is not simply that Panda Express is buying more gaming media. It is that the brand now expects its game worlds to stay alive between campaign moments.

Why gaming stopped being a campaign flight

Panda Express first used Roblox and Fortnite around menu launches and cultural moments, including Lunar New Year. Players could encounter branded environments, interact with menu-inspired elements and move through game mechanics that were designed to feel native to the platforms rather than sit outside the experience.

That setup gave the brand something traditional media cannot easily provide: a place people can revisit. Instead of ending when the paid campaign ends, the world can be updated with new courses, menu references and seasonal changes.

Crystal Chou, group media director at The Many, told Marketing Dive that gaming is now a core pillar of the brand’s marketing strategy. She also described the brand’s earlier approach as deliberately cautious, with confidence building as the channel produced measurable results.

The pattern is similar to other branded gaming efforts ContentGrip has covered, including HI-CHEW’s repeat Fortnite work. The difference here is what Panda Express is doing with the evidence: it is using measurement to justify permanence, not simply another campaign flight.

What the brand-lift data actually shows

The case for staying in gaming rests on brand-lift research rather than direct sales attribution. That distinction matters because the campaign is being used to justify an ongoing channel, while the available evidence still measures exposure, perception and intent more clearly than revenue.

Brand awareness rose 3 percentage points, consideration moved from 64% to 67%, recommendation from 61% to 64%, and high purchase intent increased 5 percentage points, according to Super League’s summary of an independent Nielsen study. The release says the reported variances reached a 90% confidence threshold.

Those results do not prove that every gaming activation will pay back in the same way. The release does not publish the full Nielsen methodology or sample size, and it does not establish an audited sales lift.

What the data does show is why the brand kept investing. The gaming work generated enough movement on tracked brand metrics for Panda Express and its partners to stop treating the channel as an experiment.

Why Panda Express is building a persistent game world

The new model is designed around continuity. Fortnite integrations are being timed to menu moments, while persistent placements keep the brand visible between larger activations. On Roblox, the Panda Express Obby has been relaunched as an always-available destination with recurring seasonal and menu-related updates.

That changes the creative job. A temporary activation only needs to feel fresh once. A persistent world has to give players reasons to return without becoming a static branded backdrop.

Rhiannon Apple, executive vice president of client strategy at Super League, summed up the logic simply: “Repeat investment only happens when the results are there.”

For marketers, the more interesting shift is operational. Always-on gaming means the brand needs a content rhythm, not just an asset drop. It has to plan updates, seasonal hooks, game mechanics and measurement as an ongoing program.

What marketers should know about always-on gaming

Panda Express’s move suggests that gaming can become more valuable when a brand stops asking whether it should appear in a game and starts asking what kind of presence is worth maintaining there.

    1. Test before you build permanence. The brand did not start with an always-on promise. It used earlier activations to establish whether people would engage and whether measurable brand metrics moved.
    2. Treat the world like a product, not an ad unit.A persistent destination needs updates, new reasons to visit and a clear role between major campaign moments. That is closer to maintaining a content property than buying a media placement.
    3. Connect creative updates to real brand moments.Panda Express is tying game activity to menu and seasonal moments. That helps the virtual world stay connected to what the brand is doing outside the game.
    4. Be precise about what the data proves.Brand lift and purchase intent are useful signals, but they are not the same as audited sales. Marketers should use the strongest evidence available without turning directional metrics into broader claims.

Gaming becomes more interesting as a marketing channel when a branded world can survive beyond the launch week. That changes the standard from whether an activation looked impressive to whether the brand has built something people might reasonably encounter again.

Panda Express is betting that continuity is worth the extra work. The next test is whether repeated updates can keep that presence useful without turning the game world into background advertising.
