Oyo Govt endorses Nigeria’s comic book industry report

TheOyo StateMinistry of Culture and Tourism has formally endorsed the Nigerian Comic Book Industry Report, published by Bookause Nigeria in partnership with The African Comics and Cinematic Empire (TheACE).

This latest development adds institutional weight to the case for treating Nigerian comics as investable intellectual property (IP) infrastructure rather than niche cultural output.

The endorsement, confirmed in a letter from the Honourable Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, followed a meeting on 20th July 2026 in which TheACE’s Founder and Editor, Mujeeb Jummah, presented the Report to the Ministry’s leadership.

Jummah was joined by Erivic Adedayo, Convener of Comic Con Ibadan, who briefed the Ministry on Afroblot, an original African art style he created that has been adopted by comic and digital artists beyond Nigeria since its debut in 2024.

The Report itself, launched at Comic Con Ibadan 2026, frames Nigerian comics as upstream IP assets that feed animation, gaming, film, and digital media, while identifying the absence of reliable data and formal publishing infrastructure as the sector’s core barrier to attracting long term investment.

A government endorsement, TheACE argues, is a step toward the institutional credibility that platforms, investors, and policymakers typically look for before committing capital to an emerging creative sector.

Afroblot is one example TheACE points to directly. First introduced through Adedayo’s 2024 comic book Jogunomi, the style combines a four-tone palette of red, black, off white, and grey with influences from limited colour manga printing and early American comic art.

It has since been the subject of a dedicated exhibition, Afroblot: The Experience, at Krates Lagos, and a companion book, Afroblot: The Memoir, and continues to gain adoption among comic and digital artists outside Nigeria, evidence, TheACE says, that Nigerian originated visual IP can travel.

The news comes as TheACE marks its second anniversary. Founded in July 2024, the platform has since reached over 150,000 accounts digitally, recorded more than 5,000 monthly engagements, and spotlighted over 100 creators and projects combined across 20 African countries, a growth trajectory TheACE points to as evidence that the underlying market is real, even where formal investment structures are still catching up.

Jummah said the absence of reliable data remains one of the biggest obstacles for investors and institutions looking at the sector. “A State government endorsement does not replace that data, but it de-risks the conversation. It tells any partner doing due diligence that this is not a fringe interest,” he said.

Adedayo argues Afroblot makes the point concretely. “Afroblot shows that African visual IP can travel. It does not have to stay local to have global reach,” he said. “That is the kind of asset investors should be paying attention to.”

The report is intended as a reference document for investors, platforms, policymakers, studios, and technology enabled creative ventures seeking to understand where comics fit within Africa’s evolving creative economy.
