PlayStation 5 emulation is making significant leaps forward

PlayStation 5 emulation on PC is still in its infancy, but looking at the blazingly fast progress PlayStation 4 emulation made with the ShadPS4 emulator, there‘s a very good chance it won’t be long until console exclusives like Bluepoint Games’Demon’s Souls remake will reach a playable state. And looking at the recent progress of both KyTyPS5 and SharpEmu, this day could be closer than most thought.

Demon’s Souls Remake Emulation Improves Significantly With SharpEmu’s Latest Version

Although it isn’t the only PlayStation 5 emulator currently in development, SharpEmu has garnered attention because its developers are focusing on emulating the Demon’s Souls remake, much like the ShadPS4 developers did with Bloodborne.

Although it is still not possible to actually play the game, the emulator has made some excellent progress in the past few days, as it now runs the game’s intro cutscene and goes past the character naming screen, showing parts of the interface and the items menu, as shown in the video below posted by Brutal Sam. Small progress, but impressive nonetheless.

    KyTyPS5 Now Runs 3D Games

The KyTyPS5 emulator has been in the workslonger than SharpEmu, yet its progress hasn’t been as fast. Still, work on the emulator is continuing, and has reached an important milestone. As shown by a few more videos by Brutal Sam, the emulator now runs select 2D games, such as MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, almost flawlessly.

The most significant improvement, however, is for 3D games, as KyTyPS5 can also run simple 3D games like Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. While this may not sound like much for the average user, as it is a relatively simple game compared to the likes of Gran Turismo 7 and Saros, which have been tested but obviously do not run on the emulator, the fact that the emulator can run a 3D game is a fundamental stepping stone to emulating the more complex games that gamers will want to run on PC, such as Marvel’s Wolverine, which won’t hit PC officially due to PlayStation’s shift in its PC strategy.

One more game that some may want to emulate ahead of its PC release is Grand Theft Auto VI, which is launching only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19. Considering the latest entry in the series by Rockstar Games is set to be a very demanding title, it’s unreasonable to expect the game getting emulated before it officially launches on PC. Still, if any emulator will be able to run the game at any point in the future, it will be a quite remarkable feat, and a victory for game preservation, with the all-digital future looming ahead.
