An Oscar-nominated powerhouse may have just landed Marvel’s most sinister role yet. A new report reveals the studio’s top casting choice for one of the X-Men’s deadliest villains
Wagner Moura rumored as Marvel’s top choice for X-Men’s Mister Sinister
Scooper MyTimeToShineHello broke the news on X on July 8, 2026. “Wagner Moura is reportedly the top choice to play the X-Men villain Mister Sinister in the MCU,” she wrote. The post rapidly amassed over 231,000 views and thousands of engagements across the platform
The Brazilian actor recently delivered an award-winning turn in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent. Notably, his performance made him the first South American actor to claim the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor prize. He then became the first Brazilian to take home the Golden Globe for Best Actor. Additionally, the Academy recognized his work with a Best Actor nomination at the 2026 Oscars
Meanwhile, Moura has steadily expanded his international profile over the past decade. He earned widespread recognition portraying drug lord Pablo Escobar across two seasons of Netflix’s Narcos. He later appeared in Alex Garland’s action thriller Civil War and the Apple TV+ miniseries Dope Thief. Furthermore, Time magazine selected him among the 100 most influential people in the world in 2026
On the comics side, Mister Sinister stands as one of Marvel Comics’ most enduring antagonists. Chris Claremont created the character, who debuted in The Uncanny X-Men #221 in September 1987. The villain originated as a Victorian-era scientist named Nathaniel Essex who received superhuman abilities from Apocalypse. Consequently, IGN placed Sinister at #29 on its ranking of the Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time
However, the character has previously appeared in X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ’97 with Christopher Britton voicing him. As of now, Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed any casting decisions regarding its X-Men plans
