Are you ready to unlock the door with the key of imagination and move into a land of shadow and substance? If so, go check out “The Twilight Zone,” Rod Serling’s groundbreaking sci-fi anthology series. This show aired on CBS with five seasons spanning from 1959 through 1964, but today you can stream it for free — with ads — on Tubi, Fandango, and Pluto TV; It’s also streaming on Paramount+, if you have a subscription to that service.

Even today, “The Twilight Zone” is celebrated for its mind-bending twists, smart cautionary tales, and appearances from genre legends like William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. While other anthology shows tend to be hit or miss, this show is consistently strong throughout, and its influence on pop culture also cannot be overstated. One “Twilight Zone” episode inspired Michael B. Jordan’s “Sinners,” which is one of the most critically acclaimed horror flicks in recent memory. You just know something is timeless when it’s inspiring the hippest modern movies almost 70 years later.

What’s more, Oscar-winning filmmakers have rebooted “The Twilight Zone to great effect”, with modern incarnations arriving in 1985, 2002, and 2019. Be that as it may, Serling’s original series remains the benchmark in most fans’ eyes, but why is it a must watch for newbies?

Why Twilight Zone fans recommend the series

Many sci-fi fans agree that the original “Twilight Zone” still feels fresh decades later — even after all of the great genre television that’s come out since the series ended in 1964. Serling’s masterpiece stands out above the rest in terms of originality, writing, and all of the things one wants from spooky entertainment. Here’s what users on Reddit had to say about this classic show.

“The Twilight Zone was so far ahead of its time. By decades, really,” said user DickTracy1931. “The phenomenal writing and storytelling is unmatched. There is an uncomfortable feeling that you get just by watching episodes. Rod Serling was a master of his craft.”

Elsewhere, Redditor Sweet_Squirrel7027 believes most movies and TV shows released in the wake of “The Twilight Zone” owe a debt of gratitude to Rod Serling’s series. “The vast majority — 99% of them — owe their plots, twists, and core ideas to The Twilight Zone. Whether it’s classic horror, psychological thrillers, or even modern supernatural TV shows, so many of them are just repackaged versions of Twilight Zone episodes.”

These sentiments are echoed by critics, as “The Twilight Zone” boasts a 92% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, audiences scored it even higher at 95%, indicating that almost everyone who’s reviewed the series agrees that “The Twilight Zone” is as good as television gets. Now that it’s streaming for free, there’s no excuse to not give it a chance.
