One retailer has stepped forward with a claim that Nintendo has a policy in place which prevents Switch 2 titles released as a game-key card from being reprinted as a traditional cartridge.
Game-key cards have drawn the ire of certain consumers – particularly collectors. VGP has apparently explored the possibility of bringing out a new, full cartridge version of certain titles previously released as a game-key card. Unfortunately, though, it looks like “there’s a Nintendo policy preventing that.”
Game-key cards work differently than traditional physical releases. With traditional physical titles, you can pop in a cartridge and play right away. However, with a game-key card, there is no data, meaning you need to download everything from the internet before the game is playable.
VGP wrote on social media about Nintendo’s game-key card policy:
“When it comes to game-key cards, all the publishers know exactly where VGP stands. Unfortunately, we don’t see much changing with most of the bigger publishers. As we’ve stated many times, we’d actively try to get existing game-key card titles reprinted as full-on-cart versions, but at the moment, there’s a Nintendo policy preventing that. That said, we’ll keep pushing, keep asking questions, and keep annoying them.”
Unfortunately, VGP didn’t share any information beyond what we’ve posted above. The retailer didn’t clarify what policy is in place currently.
What are your thoughts on game-key cards? Have they changed or stayed the same since they were initially revealed? Let us know in the comments.
