The new series takes viewers back to the beginning, focusing on the first mystery that brings Mystery Inc. together. Netflix describes it as a modern take on the Hanna-Barbera characters, with the story beginning during the gang’s final summer at camp.
The series follows Shaggy and Daphne as they encounter a lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder. Velma and Freddy soon join them as the group investigates a mystery that threatens to reveal their secrets.

A Live-Action Mystery Inc. Gets Its Cast
The new Scooby-Doo features Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. Paul Walter Hauser and a large supporting ensemble also appear in the series.
One of the biggest changes is that this isn’t another animatedScooby-Dooadventure. Netflix is bringing the characters into live action, while also making franchise history by using a real Great Dane to portray Scooby.
The decision gives the series a more grounded approach while keeping the basic ingredients parents and kids recognize: friendship, mysteries, spooky settings and a very memorable dog. Executive producer Greg Berlanti described the project as a story that captures the spirit of the original creation.
The production was filmed in Atlanta and is being led by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, with Toby Haynes directing the premiere. Warner Bros. Television is producing the series.
Why Scooby-Doo Keeps Coming Back
Few children’s entertainment franchises have the same multigenerational history as Scooby-Doo. The original series debuted more than 50 years ago, and the franchise has since expanded into more than a dozen animated series, three theatrical films and nearly 40 animated home-entertainment movies.
That long history means parents who grew up watching Scooby-Doo can now introduce a new version to their own children. The basic formula—young friends solving mysteries with their dog—has remained recognizable even as the animation styles and storytelling have changed.
The franchise has also successfully crossed between animation and live action before. The 2002 live-action movie starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini earned more than $250 million worldwide, followed by a sequel in 2004.
With Scooby-Doo: Origins, Netflix is once again betting that a familiar group of mystery solvers can connect with a new generation. For parents, that could make the 2027 series a nostalgic family-watch—provided the new take delivers the right mix of spooky fun and friendship.
