Netflix, MLB, Jason Bateman Team for New York Yankees Drama Series

Netflix is teaming up with MLB and Jason Bateman’s production company for a new drama series connected with the New York Yankees franchise.

    Article Summary

    • Netflix, MLB, and Jason Bateman are developing a scripted Yankees drama series with full league cooperation.
    • Josh Wakely leads the Yankees project, with Aggregate Films, MLB Studios, and Brillstein producing.
    • The Yankees series expands Netflix’s MLB partnership, which already includes major baseball events through 2028.
    • With 27 World Series titles and global value, the Yankees offer Netflix one of sports’ biggest brands to dramatize.

New York Yankees history runs deep in this country, and the roots will only get deeper now. Netflix is partnering with MLB and Jason Bateman’s production company, Aggregate Films, for a new scripted drama series centered on the team. Think what the streamer has done with Running Point, only with the full cooperation of MLB. Daytime Emmy winner Josh Wakely is behind the series. He will produce for Grace: A Storytelling Company. Bateman and Michael Costigan produce for Aggregate, Nick Trotta for MLB Studios, as well as Peter Sobiloff, Mike Sobiloff, Sean Mullin, Josh Glick, Daniel Cohan, and Jon Liebman for Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Deadline had the news of the series.

The New York Yankees Are Perfect For This

Netflix and MLB are working together until 2028, with deals in place to air the Home Run Derby, next week’s Field of Dreams series, and the season kick-off game for the next couple of years. The streamer has also worked with Bateman numerous times and has multiple series in the works with Wakely. So this is as in-house as it gets for Netflix. While the Dodgers have taken up the mantle of baseball’s villains, the New York Yankees remain one of, if not the most popular, franchises in all of sports. They have the most World Series wins (27), 52 players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, 24 retired numbers, and are the tenth most valuable sports franchise in the world, valued at around $8 billion.

It makes total sense to center this series on the New York Yankees, but I kind of wish they had used a lower-rung team instead. The best dramatization of baseball ever put on screen is the Major League franchise, focusing on my beloved Cleveland baseball franchise, then the Indians, and now the Guardians. For a long time, that is all we could hang our hat on as fans around here, so using another team besides the most recognizable one in the sport may have given them a bigger boost than the Yankees don’t need.
