Meta is introducing a new virtual reality (VR) device designed to combine immersive <a href="https://comicvibe.com/stellar-entertainment-launches-cosmo-vision-to-speed-up-ife-compliance-screening/” title=”Stellar Entertainment Launches Cosmo Vision to Speed Up IFE Compliance Screening”>entertainment, gaming and workplace tools in a glasses-style form factor weighing about 100 grams.

The company says Meta VR Glasses are its most advanced VR device to date and are about five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3.

    A two-part VR system

The glasses are designed as a two-part system. The glasses contain the display and sensors, while a separate computing unit, or puck, connected through an optical tether, houses the processor, battery and storage. The puck can be clipped to a pocket or bag.

Meta says the glasses use micro-OLED panels with a 5K infinite display and 37 pixels per degree. They also feature pancake lenses, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos spatial audio.

The device has open sides and passthrough cameras, allowing users to remain aware of their surroundings while wearing the glasses.

The puck provides up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback and supports 45-watt fast charging. The system is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor.

    IMAX and 3D entertainment

According to Meta, its VR Glasses are the first VR device to receive IMAX enhanced certification, allowing users to access selected films in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio.

An upcoming Disney Immersive Cinema app developed with ILM will provide VR-enhanced versions of films including Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope, with 3D visuals, spatial audio and interactive environments.

Meta says thousands of titles will be available internationally by the device’s launch. It is also working with streaming services including Prime Video, YouTube, ESPN, Crunchyroll, Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+.

A virtual seat at live sports

According to Meta, the glasses will provide access to more than 100 immersive live US sporting events each year through partnerships with organisations including MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC. Its Immersive Sports experience will provide 180-degree views and 8K streaming, with college football among the initial content. More sports are planned for 2027.

    A virtual workspace

Beyond entertainment, Meta is presenting the glasses as a computing platform. Users will be able to create multiple virtual screens around them, allowing them to work in a private digital workspace without a conventional monitor.

The system can also turn a flat surface into a virtual keyboard and touchpad. Full-colour passthrough will allow users to see their physical desk, phone and surroundings while working.

Meta says more than 75 games will support hand-gesture controls at launch, while Xbox Cloud Gaming will provide access to hundreds of additional games through streaming.

    AI and hologram calls

Meta is integrating its AI assistant directly into the glasses’ operating system. Users will be able to use voice commands, eye movements and hand gestures to open applications, play media, modify their workspace or search for information without controllers.

The company is also introducing hologram calling. Meta says the feature can create a photorealistic digital representation of a person, including real-time facial expressions and reactions. Spatial audio is intended to make the hologram appear as though it is occupying a position in the user’s surroundings.

The feature will work with calling services including WhatsApp and Zoom

Meta VR Glasses are expected to reach consumers in spring 2027 at a starting price of $1,299.99.
