Marvel Studios picks Spider-Man: Brand New Day captain Stephen Wacker as new boss for Marvel Comics editorial

It’s the beginning of a ‘Brand New Day’ era at Marvel Comics editorial.

Big news for the House of Ideas today: it has a new boss, and he’s planning on adding some new floors to it all.

Veteran comics editor Stephen Wacker has been named the new editor-in-chief of Marvel, effective immediately. Wacker takes over from C.B. Cebulski, who has been in the role since 2017, and is moving over to a new position.

“I’m proud to join Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president], Brad [Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise], David [Abdo, General Manager, Comics & Franchise], and this incredible staff and amazing array of talent to build on the work started by Stan, Jack, Steve, Flo, John, and so many more,” Wacker says in a statement posted on Marvel’s official blog July 16. “I truly believe the best Marvel comics have yet to be written and drawn, and I can’t wait to get to work adding some new floors to the House of Ideas.”

Who is the new Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Stephen Wacker?

Although this decision was made by Marvel Studios (and Wacker will report to Winderbaum), the new EIC brings with him several decades of experience in making landmark turning points at Marvel Comics. Fittingly for this season, Wacker was headhunted from DC by Marvel over a decade ago to oversee its first-ever weekly comic book series in the landmark ‘Brand New Day’ era of the Amazing Spider-Man, which of course lends its name to this summer’s next cinematic Spidey adventure. Wacker also oversaw the comic runs that would reinvent the Captain Marvel character as Carol Danvers, and introduce much-beloved legacy characters like Spider-Gwen and Ms. Marvel, as well as pioneer a new approach to creator-led stories with Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye (which inspired the TV series) that became a template for both Marvel and DC to use for several very successful character-defining stories for the likes of Vision (which inspired Marvel Studios’ WandaVision), Supergirl (which inspired the recent Supergirl film), and Mister Miracle (which has inspired the upcoming animated series).

Wacker also has a long-standing relationship with one of the most valuable creators at the publication right now: Ultimate Spider-Man scribe Jonathan Hickman. Wacker served as EIC for Hickman’s ambitious 3 Worlds / 3 Moons comic book universe, which you may recall Popverse reporting on after a collaboration with Dark Horse was announced this year.

What Marvel Studios sees in this new era for Marvel Comics

“I’m excited to welcome Stephen Wacker back to Marvel,” said Winderbaum in the official Marvel statement, “He is a tremendous editor, a passionate advocate for creators, and someone who deeply understands that Marvel Comics is the includes some of our most beloved modern runs.”
