Madonna honored her daughter Lourdes Leon’s 30th birthday with a moving message that included rare family photos from Leon’s childhood.
The 68-year-old pop icon shared a celebratory Instagram post on Wednesday honoring Leon’s birthday, in which she shared a beautifully intimate photo of herself breastfeeding Leon as a baby shortly after she and ex Carlos Leon welcomed their daughter in a Los Angeles hospital.
“Happy Birthday My Lolita! You came to me in a Dream. A fever dream. A Dream called Life. If I tried to write it all down, I would cry a river of tears,” Madonna wrote in the caption. “Your chin was tilted up in my birth canal, after 18 hours of labor and your heartbeat, slowing down, an emergency C-section was the only option.”

The Confessions IIperformer also recalled that “the helicopters and news crews” were “swirling above our head on the top floor of the hospital in East LA” during Leon’s “dramatic” birth.
“Our connection is Biblical. When I ask God to explain to me He tells me- Look in the mirror! You are Two side sides of the same coin,” Madonna continued of her connection to Leon, whom she previously sang about on her 1998 Ray of Light album song “Little Star,” which she went on to reference in her post.
“Never forget who you are- Little Star, shining brighter than all the stars in the sky,” Madonna continued, quoting the song’s lyrics. “Never forget how to Dream Butterfly. Never forget where you come from. From Love.”
Madonna has written about her relationship with Leon since the beginning of the latter’s life, with many songs on Ray of Light —also including album single “Nothing Really Matters” — revolving around themes related to motherhood and existentialism.
The artist later incorporated Leon into her musical output, as they worked together on the 2012 MDNA album cut “Superstar,” and again on July’sConfessions IIsong “The Test.”
The latter song sees the mother-daughter pair trading verses about their complex relationship, including addressing “coattail” criticism.
“I know they tried to put us to the test. I’m not the same when I’m hanging on your coattail,” the lyrics read. “Sometimes I wish I could multiply but I know you are all I need.”
Leon also starred with her mother in Confessions II — The Film, a cinematic project highlighting six Confessions II album cuts that went on to score Madonna 13 overall MTV VMA nominations at this year’s ceremony (more than any other artist in 2026).

In addition to Leon, Madonna had a son, Rocco Ritchie, in 2000 with film director Guy Ritchie. She also adopted four other children, including David Banda (born in 2005), daughter Mercy James (born in 2006), and twins Stella and Estere Ciccone (born in 2012) —most of whom she brought out on various tour stops during her Celebration Tour throughout 2023 and 2024.
