Madhuri Dixit recalls late mother’s life-changing advice on KBC 18: ‘If you want to do this, then prove it by doing it’

Madhuri Dixit opened up about the deep influence her late mother had on her life and career during a heartfelt conversation with Amitabh Bachchan on Kaun Banega Crorepati 18.

Sitting on the Hot Seat during the show’s AB Birthday Week Special, Madhuri reflected on her early years in the film industry and revealed how her mother’s advice helped her deal with criticism, self-doubt and the pressures that came with entering showbiz at a young age.

During their conversation, Amitabh gently asked Madhuri about the bond she shared with her mother and whether there was something important she had learnt from her.

“Madhuri ji, kya aap maanti hain jinko aap aai kehti hain unse aapne bahut kuch sikha hai, ya kuch aisa jo aapne unse prapt kiya ho?” he asked.

The question prompted Madhuri to look back at how strongly her mother shaped both her artistic journey and the way she dealt with difficult moments.

‘Whatever art or dance I have, everything came from her’

Speaking about her mother, Madhuri said, “I would say jitni bhi kala hain ya art hai ya dance ho, sab kuch mujhe unse hi aaya hain. Toh maa joh thi, she was very strong, jitni aapki maata ji strong thi waisi hi woh bhi thi.”

She said that whether it was art, creativity or dance, she believed much of it came from her mother.

Madhuri also compared her mother’s strength to Amitabh’s late mother, Teji Bachchan, saying both women had an immense inner resilience.

Madhuri then spoke about how emotionally vulnerable she was when she first entered the film industry.

“When I entered this field, I was very young, so if someone said something to me, I would go home and feel very hurt,” she recalled.

At that stage of her life, criticism and negative comments would affect her deeply. Her mother, however, would constantly push her to become mentally stronger and not allow outside opinions to define her choices.

‘Don’t be so weak and don’t listen to what others say’

Recalling her mother’s advice, Madhuri said, “Maa humesha kehti thi ki itna weak nahi hona aur kisi ki nahi sunna, tumhe yeh karna hain toh karke dikhao.”

She translated the lesson through her own experience: if she truly wanted to pursue something, she had to stop being discouraged by what others said and instead prove herself through her work.

Madhuri continued, “Woh kehti thi bas kaam karo aur sincerity se kaam karo, aur jo logon ko sab negative lag raha hain, ek success ke baad sab positive ho jaata hain.”

Her mother’s message was simple: keep working sincerely, stay focused and do not get consumed by negativity. According to Madhuri, her mother believed that one genuine success could completely change how people perceived you.

The recollection offered a glimpse into the emotional foundation behind Madhuri’s long career.

What her mother taught her was not merely how to deal with criticism, but how to remain consistent when people around her doubted her choices. The lesson was to let the work speak instead of reacting to every negative opinion.

For Madhuri, that advice became especially important as she navigated the uncertainty of an industry where public opinion could change quickly.

The conversation also struck an emotional chord because Madhuri was speaking about her late mother while sitting across from Amitabh, who has often spoken about the influence of his own parents.

Their exchange turned into a broader reflection on how parents, and especially mothers, often shape confidence, discipline and resilience without expecting recognition for it.

The episode is part of Kaun Banega Crorepati 18’s AB Birthday Week Special and will air on Friday, October 9, at 9 PM on Sony Entertainment Television.
