LEGO Fights Off Mattel’s XBOX Brick Set With a 1:1 Replica of the Original PlayStation
A few days ago, at the beginning of the month, PlayStation’s most recent State of Play event was overshadowed by an announcement made by a company that puts an entirely physical spin on fun and games: LEGO. Ok, maybe it was not the announcement itself that overshadowed State of Play, but the product LEGO announced: a near 1:1 scale replica of the original PlayStation console and the controller that came with it.
The reveal was, ironically, both a surprise and something we were kind of expecting. After all, it was only a few days prior that competitor Mattel revealed a 1:1 Building Toy Kit replica of the original Microsoft XBOX console from a quarter of a century ago.
Just like in Mattel’s case, this is the first time LEGO has recreated the iconic gaming console, and it did so by throwing in a 1,911-piece build set. Once properly assembled, these bits of plastic form an object that measures over 2.5 inches (six cm) high, 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide, and 7.5 inches (19 cm) deep.
As a side note, the numbers above make the PlayStation replica a lot smaller than the Mattel XBOX. That one is put together using 3,509 plastic bricks and ends up measuring about the same as the original console did: 3.6 inches (nine cm) high, 12.6 inches (32 cm) wide, and 10.2 inches (26 cm) deep.
The plastic PlayStation recreates many of the original console’s standout features, starting with the iconic grey overalls and ending with the functional Open and Power buttons. As a final touch, the controller it comes with can be plugged in, so that adult builders (that’s the official target audience for the set) can relive some of the moments that defined their 1990s childhood.
The fun truly begins once the console is popped open, as inside it, LEGO hid buildable dioramas inspired by two of the video games that will forever be linked to PlayStation: Gran Turismo and Ape Escape.
In the case of the former, the diorama manifests itself as a mini track with tiny cars in race position, while the latter shows the game’s red or blue monkey helmet. Depending on needs, both these scenes can either be hidden inside the console or displayed alongside it.
As a reminder, for the XBOX set, Mattel is throwing in a dozen NanoWorld figures that replicate some of the most famous characters from Halo: Combat Evolved, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and Psychonauts.
The LEGO PlayStation (72306) set will be made available for insiders on October 1, and for the rest of the world three days later. The Danish toymaker is asking $179.99 for it, which is almost half the price Mattel is charging for the larger XBOX: $329.99.
