Capcom has scored a major day-one success with its latest samurai action game, proving that its strategy of reviving classic franchises is paying off.

According to the latest update on its website, the publisher has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold more than one million copies worldwide on its first day, giving the long-running franchise an impressive boost.

The milestone is particularly notable because the game marks the first new mainline Onimusha title in more than 20 years. It launched on September 4, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, <a href="https://comicvibe.com/retroid-takes-on-nintendo-nostalgia-with-new-dual/” title=”Retroid takes on Nintendo nostalgia with new dual”>Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

Set in Edo-era Kyoto, Onimusha: Way of the Sword follows legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, whose visual likeness is modeled after legendary actor Toshiro Mifune. He battles supernatural Genma demon hordes using sharp swordplay and powerful Oni abilities.

The game’s launch helped push cumulative lifetime sales for the Onimusha series past 10 million copies worldwide.

Capcom’s revival strategy pays off with Onimusha’s success

Capcom’s strategy of bringing back older franchises seems to pay off as Onimusha: Way of the Sword witnessed a strong opening.

The Japan-based company has continued releasing games from major series such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. On the side, they are also looking for opportunities to revive properties that have been inactive for years.

Capcom spent considerable time building anticipation for Onimusha: Way of the Sword ahead of its release. The publisher showcased the game at various public events and released downloadable demos through the PlayStation Store.

Players got an early chance to experience its sword-based combat. That approach appears to have helped the game reach both longtime fans and players discovering the franchise for the first time.

The original Onimusha was released in 2001, meaning a large portion of the audience for the new game may be experiencing the series for the first time.
