Lanterns has already established how foundational the Green Lantern mythology is to this new DCU, as Green Lanterns were around and protecting the Earth in public well before Superman had even arrived on the planet. While episode 1 established quite a few details about Hal Jordan and the dynamic with John Stewart, episode 2 had several other intriguing details to share, including one character’s ties to Gotham City, and that revelation has sparked the start of a major DC theory.

Spoilers incoming for Lanterns episode 2, so if you haven’t watched the episode yet, you’ve been warned. During the episode, it’s revealed that Sheriff Kerry Kane (played by Kelly Macdonald) is not actually from Rushville, but Gotham City. Then later during a phone call with someone from Gotham she ends the call by saying, “Tell Barb I said hi”, and that’s likely Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl. In another scene, we see Kerry say, “I can’t do this again” when discussing jurisdiction, which does tease that she’s had to have similar conflicts with the Bat-Family. That brings us to the new theory gaining steam, which is that Sheriff Kane is related to DC’s Kate Kane, who is also the popular hero known as Batwoman.
Lanterns Might Already Be Establishing the Bat-Family
Having the name Gotham City mentioned at any point is always going to be significant given its importance to Batman, so when Sheriff Kerry says she’s from Gotham, the comics antenna immediately goes up. Sure, that could just be a way to further establish the world, as with a city as well-known as Gotham, people are obviously going to be from there. It still stands out though even if you take that into consideration, and that’s led some fans to theorize that it happened for a specific reason.
Lending credence to this is the fact that Sheriff Kerry’s last name is Kane, so it was never going to take too long for people to make the connection to Batwoman’s Kate Kane. This would also be a way to connect to the Bat-Family without having to showcase Batman, which would be an interesting way to get around any delays in getting this new DCU Batman to the screen.
One assumes that James Gunn and Peter Safran will take a similar approach to Batman as they have with Superman and Green Lantern, which is to say, they are already established in the DCU when we meet them. If that’s true of Superman, it’s likely true of Batman as well, but if there’s going to be a longer wait to get a Batman cast and in a project, you could sidestep it and go with someone like Batwoman, who is affiliated with the Bat-Family but still largely operates on her own. A connection to Sheriff Kane then gives you some crossover runway, and now that you’ve included Barbara’s name, you can really expand the Gotham angle in any number of ways.
Hopefully we’ll find out more about Kerry’s time in Gotham down the line, and who knows, maybe this will be the start of Batwoman’s DCU story as well.
