Keri Russell told Matthew Rhys to leave her out of his Emmys speech.
After the Widow’s Baystar omitted his longtime partner from his acceptance remarks, Russell clarified that they had discussed the matter beforehand. She explained that Rhys was “nervous” in the lead-up to the Emmy Awards this year. To help put him at ease, the Diplomat star told him that he didn’t have to worry about thanking her.
“I looked at him like a few days before, and I said, ‘Okay, well, can you articulate what you’re most nervous about?'” Russell said on the Thursday episode of Dear Chelsea. “And he’s like, ‘Yeah, having to speak.’ And I said, ‘Totally.’ And I said, ‘Take me off your plate. Like, you don’t have to thank me. I know you love me.'”
She explained that there’s a lot of pressure to fit people into the short speech. After he won an Emmy for his role on The Americans, Rhys apparently irked some members of the production because he forgot to mention them in his speech.
“People still give him a hard time because he didn’t say their name,” she shared. “Like, it’s so crazy. People get nuts. It’s stupid and it’s also lame.”
Rhys made history at the Emmys this year, snagging trophies for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Meand Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay.He became the first person to win lead acting prizes in all three genres.
After people noted that he didn’t mention Russell, whom he has been with since 2014, he explained to E! News, “I didn’t really prepare anything, which is why I vomited that speech.”

But if anyone was worried that the omission meant trouble in paradise, Rhys assured viewers that was not the case. He called her a “class act” and shared his hopes for her to win her first Emmy soon.
“She’s always really the winner, if I’m perfectly honest. I think next year she might get one,” he said backstage at the award show in September.
