Judge Dreddeasily ranks among the most influential science fiction properties of all time. Despite not having too many major appearances outside of his native comic books, the character and world of Dreddhas remained iconic, naturally making a wide variety of creators eager to put their own spin on the property. While fans might be waiting for the Taika Waititi-helmed thirdJudgeDreddmovie, the anti-hero is about to begin his new era, and it’s a crossover with a big 1990s science fiction franchise.

Recently, Oni Press announced Judge Dredd/Biker Mice From Mars. The first issue releases on December 2nd and comes courtesy of writers Dan Watters, Ryan O’Sullivan, and artist Jordi Tarragona. To celebrate just how big the crossover will certainly be, Oni is making the first issue a double-sized 40-page extravaganza.

In addition to the talented creative team working hard on the book’s interiors, Oni is enlisting the help of some all-stars for the covers. David Finch, Karl Kerschl, and Andrew Krahnke are all contributing variant covers for the first issue.

As if that wasn’t enough, Oni has also given ScreenRant an exclusive look at a set of four badge variant covers designed by Winston Gambro. These designs appear to be deliberate homages to comic icon Brian Bolland’s work on 2000AD, the original comic home for Dredd.

Judge Dredd’s New Series Is An Epic Crossover With The Biker Mice From Mars

Oni has also released a basic plot synopsis for the upcoming crossover. It sounds like the Biker Mice and Dredd will initially be at odds as the latter tries to bring the former in. However, the comic also hints that an appearance from the classic villain Judge Death will unite Dredd and the Mice, teasing a truly epic team-up.

Across the frayed cordons of space-time, the greed-fueled oligarchs Limburger and Karbunkle have identified a strange new world to plunder, but they never anticipated that Throttle, Vinnie, and Modo—the extraterrestrial antiheroes known as the BIKER MICE FROM MARS—would dare to foil their latest cross dimensional conquest: the smog-clogged metropolis known as Mega-City One.

Now, the Martian brothers and their bikes are stranded between blocks in Mega-City’s endless, chaotic sprawl, alongside 400 million citizens who want them dead and the one man committed to delivering them to justice at any cost: the unforgiving JUDGE DREDD! The law has no place for vermin on Mega-City One’s streets… but when the Biker Mice’s otherworldly abilities draw the gaze of the inhuman entity called Judge Death, man and mouse alike will be caught in the crosshairs!

All of that appears exciting and should offer enough thrills and fun matchups for fans of both franchises. Oni has been killing it with their recentBiker Mice From Marscomics, so there’s good reason to believe the comic giant will do so again with the new Judge Dreddcrossover.

Luckily for fans wondering how this crossover could possibly play out, Oni has released a series of five preview pages. Though the pages are in black and white and don’t have dialog added, the visual storytelling is strong and shows just how well the two franchises truly mesh.

Why The Judge Dredd/Biker Mice From Mars Crossover Actually Makes Perfect Sense

While Judge Dreddand Biker Miceare undeniably two very different franchises with seemingly different audiences, both series have a certain plasticity to them. Judge Dredd can be a deadly serious crime fighter, a satirical criticism of the fascist police state, and anything in between. Meanwhile, though Biker Mice From Mars is definitely a more family-friendly franchise, there is certainly potential for a darker take on the property, as the franchise deals with themes of corporate greed and exploitation, all subject matter that fits right in with Judge Dredd’sproto-cyberpunk dystopia.

Oni Press themselves have been exploring some of Biker Mice From Mars’darker potential with their new series, so it’s clear the publisher understands how to make these characters work in a slightly more mature context.

While it remains to be seen how well the crossover will be received, the preview pages show a great deal of promise. Artist Jordi Tarragona does an incredible job of making these two worlds feel like they belong together, so that’s certainly an encouraging sign.

Fans of Judge Dreddand Biker Mice From Marshave a lot to look forward to when Oni Press drops the super-sized first issue of Judge Dredd/Biker Mice From Marson December 2nd!
