Jonathan Hickman still has strong feelings about never getting to finish his original plans for the Krakoa era, but X-Men fans probably shouldn’t expect him to return and tell his abandoned version of the story.

During an appearance on the Battle of the Atom podcast, Hickman was asked directly whether he might someday revisit his planned second and third acts of Krakoa.
His answer was clear.
“I don’t think that’s a smart thing to do, because that’s kind of like writing over everybody else, and that’s not cool,” Hickman confirmed.
Hickman has previously discussed the disappointment surrounding his departure from the larger X-Men story, and that feeling clearly hasn’t disappeared.
“It sucks that I didn’t get to finish what I set out to do, and the main reason why is because it was so fucking good.”
Hickman also reflected on just how unusual the beginning of the Krakoa era was. House of X and Powers of X didn’t simply introduce another X-Men series. Marvel effectively relaunched its entire mutant publishing line around Hickman’s concept.
“You don’t walk into a room of editors and say, ‘Hey, I’ve got a great idea, we’re gonna cancel every book in this line. We’re gonna zero out about four million dollars in revenue, and then we’re going to just let me do… I’m just gonna play some jazz.’”
Hickman said the circumstances surrounding the era eventually became complicated, but pushed back against old fan theories that placed blame on individual members of the X-Men creative team.
“I unquestionably care very deeply for everybody that was in that office during that time. I felt very protective of all of them.”
Ultimately, Hickman appears content to let the published Krakoa story stand rather than create an alternate version that disregards the work done after his departure.
There could, however, be a small acknowledgment of those abandoned ideas in his new X-Men series.
“I probably will wink at something in this Midnight book. I’m sure I will at some point because I’ll, you know, I’ll be feeling, I’ll be in a mood.”
As for actually returning to finish his Krakoa?
“It just ended, and it ended badly, and it bums me out, and, you know, sometimes you lose.”
I recommend checking out the entire episode; it’s a great interview.
