John Chayka opens up about Maple Leafs fandom, responsibility that comes with leading childhood team

When the Toronto Maple Leafs named John Chayka general manager following the 2025-26 season, the temperature was higher than it’s been in the past decade of Auston Matthews-era hockey. The Maple Leafs were fresh off of missing the playoffs for the first time in said era, and following the firing of Brad Treliving, there was a lot of pressure on Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment CEO Keith Pelley to nail the next general manager hiring. So, when he landed on Chayka, a young and analytic-minded executive with shades of Kyle Dubas who carried a little bit of controversy from his time with the Arizona Coyotes, parts of the media and fanbase met him with vitriol at his introductory press conference.

Speaking to Joshua Clipperton of the Canadian Press in a recent interview, Chayka brushed off the tension from his presser and chalked it up to the longing desire for success in this market.

“It wasn’t the season anyone wanted and changes were made,” he said. “You’re communicating those changes. I wish I could say I was surprised there were hard-hitting questions or there were people that wanted to ask follow-ups and dig in…the media plays an incredibly important role in this entire ecosystem. That connection to fans is really important to me. I have no issues or problems. I’m always happy to be a pro, answer any questions.”

That connection to fans is important to Chayka because he’s a fan himself. A native of Jordan Station, Ontario, a town 20 minutes out of Niagara Falls and 90 minutes from Toronto, he mentioned his childhood Leafs fandom when he was first hired and doubled down on it in his interview with Clipperton.

“I’ve loved this team for as long as I can remember,” Chayka said. “I think ‘love’ is the key word. The love that the fans have for their team is really unique. Love is complicated in our personal lives. When you think about loving a team, there’s the euphoric highs, and if there’s downs, people are upset. Their days can be made or broken on the results of a game. With that comes a real obligation.”

A surefire way to win over a Maple Leafs fan as a newcomer to the organization is to talk about growing up a Leafs fan. There’s no doubt that Chayka’s comments will resonate with some fans and perhaps even win over a couple of skeptics, but at this stage, talk is cheap, and Chayka knows that.

“There’s no question fans will love the Toronto Maple Leafs. The question becomes, can we be deserving of that love? You don’t do that overnight. You don’t do that by winning a game. You do that through consistent efforts over a long time. It’s our obligation to earn that love.”

The Maple Leafs will open the season on September 29 when they host the Montreal Canadiens.
