Investors hate Roblox’ new direction – but a reversal may be impossible | Opinion

Roblox’s valuation has been hammered after a year of weaker growth signals, with shares down about 73% and roughly $9 billion wiped off market cap in a single day after its latest results. Daily active users fell in the most recent quarter, and near-term revenue guidance points to more pressure ahead. For investors who once priced Roblox like a tech platform with endless upside, the company is starting to look much more like a conventional games business with real limits.

The bigger issue is that Roblox is actively changing how the platform works. It has been pushing recommendation systems toward games with stronger long-term retention, adding age checks for social features, and shifting some attention toward adult users. Those moves may improve safety and sustainability, but they also reduce the kind of rapid-hit monetisation and viral churn that helped drive earlier growth. In other words, the company is trading short-term revenue for a business model that can survive scrutiny.

That scrutiny is getting harder to avoid. Roblox is now likely to be designated by the EU as a very large online platform, which brings obligations around illegal content, minor protection, transparency, and researcher data access. The designation is based on user scale, and it raises the cost of rolling back safety changes. For developers, it’s another reminder that platforms built around younger audiences are increasingly being forced to balance growth, monetisation, and compliance at the same time.
