“Saban,” the six-part documentary series about former Alabama Crimson Tide coach and college football legend Nick Saban, makes its premiere to a national audience Thursday.

ESPN announced the documentary series about the seven-time national championship coach in late August. The first episode will be televised Thursday, Oct. 8. All six episodes can be seen on ESPN from October and into early November and will be available to stream on ESPN+.

Among the familiar faces Alabama fans will recognize in the docuseries are former Saban payers and Alabama football greats Derrick Henry, Bryce Young, Julio Jones, Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts and A.J. McCarron. Former Saban assistants turned SEC head coaches Kirby Smart and Lane Kiffin are also featured.

Rival players and coaches in the documentary series include former Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer, as well as former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees will appear, as well.

A promotional clip for the documentary series released in August quoted Saban as saying: “I’m not saying it was never good enough… but it was never good enough.”

In 17 seasons at Alabama, Saban led the Crimson Tide to six national championships, nine SEC titles and three appearances in the BCS national championship game. He guided the Crimson Tide to eight appearances in the College Football Playoff. Saban retired in January 2024. His record at Alabama was 206-29 across his 17 seasons.

Prior to becoming Alabama’s coach in January 2007, Saban led Michigan State from 1995-99. He guided LSU from 2000-2004, leading the Tigers to the BCS national championship in 2003.

What did Nick Saban say about new ESPN documentary series?

Saban said in a press release in August:

“With my coaching days behind me, Miss Terry and I have been doing a lot of reflection and realized we were ready to tell our story. The team at Words + Pictures has encouraged me to really look back not just at my time at Alabama, but every stop along the way — and not just reflect on what happened but consider the process which made it happen. I interacted with a lot of players and coaches along the way and I’m happy to see that so many of them have contributed to this docuseries. There’s a lot to tell, and I’m excited to share it all.”
