Sorry, partners. It doesn’t sound like an onscreen reunion between Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and his late dad John (Kevin Costner) will happen anytime soon.
Grimes, 42, was asked in a recentUSA Todayinterview if there was any chance that Costner, 71, could make an appearance in a future episode of the actor‘s very own Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals. And, as it turns out, the pair haven’t exactly kept in touch since the flagship series wrapped in 2024.
“I’ve never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together,” Grimes explained. “Not for any other reason other than just, you know, we’re both busy guys and life moves on.”

While he did acknowledge that the opportunity to revisit Kayce’s relationship with his late father “would be cool,” Grimes noted that “I doubt that will happen at this point.”
He continued, “I just don’t know… I think, if there was a flashback, I’d probably rather it be with Monica than John. I think that’d be more poignant to the character, but we’ll see.”
Grimes’ choice makes sense, given that Kayce’s wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) was killed off screen prior to the start of Marshals. Her death loomed large across the first season of the CBS spinoff, deeply affecting both Kayce and the couple’s son Tate (Brecken Merrill).
When asked about Asbille potentially reprising her role on an episode, Grimes replied, “There’s been no conversation, but I sure would love it. I love working with her.”

Costner and Grimes starred as John and Kayce Dutton across all five seasons of Yellowstone, which aired from 2018 until 2024. During the final season, John was shockingly killed in a murder-for-hire plot that was staged to look like a suicide.
Kayce, meanwhile, was instrumental in proving that his father’s death wasn’t by his own hand. Instead, it was revealed that it was the girlfriend of his brother Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) who was behind their dad’s assassination.

In June, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan addressed Costner’s early departure from the series, telling The Bill Simmons Podcast that the actor was “only supposed to be in the first three seasons” but that his plans changed because of the show’s immense popularity.
“Finally, Kevin hit a point where he’s like, ‘I gotta do my own thing. I gotta do my own thing too,'” Sheridan said at the time. “But we had originally conceived it together that it was three seasons and then the baton is handed.”
He added, “I wonder if that wouldn’t have been better for the show because we had to tread water for a bit there. I think it was pretty evident.”
