Chandra Prakash Dwivedi’s 2003 film Pinjar, adapted from Amrita Pritam’s Punjabi novel, stars Urmila Matondkar and Manoj Bajpayee. It follows Puro, a Hindu woman abducted by Rashid as revenge for an old family feud. Against the backdrop of Partition violence, the film explores displacement, identity and compassion.
Directed by MS Sathyu, Garm Hava stars Balraj Sahni as Salim Mirza, a Muslim businessman in Agra whose family begins migrating to Pakistan after Partition. As prejudice, financial difficulties and personal tragedies increase, Salim struggles with questions of belonging and whether he still has a place in the country he considers home.
Pamela Rooks’ Train to Pakistan, based on Khushwant Singh’s novel, is set in the fictional village of Mano Majra. The peaceful relationship between Sikh and Muslim residents is shattered when Partition violence arrives in the form of a train carrying dead bodies. The film combines communal conflict with a tragic love story.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag follows athlete Milkha Singh, played by Farhan Akhtar. The film shows how the massacre of his family during Partition leaves lasting emotional scars, before he transforms his pain into sporting success and eventually returns to Pakistan to confront his past.
Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel’s Gadar: Ek Prem Katha tells the story of Tara Singh and Sakina, whose romance develops amid Partition riots. Their relationship later faces another challenge when Sakina travels to Pakistan and is prevented from returning to India.

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Main Vaapas Aaunga revolves around Keenu’s promise to return to his first love, Jiya, after they are separated during Partition. Decades later, his grandson Nirvair travels to Pakistan to fulfil his grandfather’s final wish. The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, Sharvari and Diljit Dosanjh.
Rajkumar Santoshi’s Batwara 1947, adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, follows a family moving from Lucknow to Lahore during Partition. Starring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Shabana Azmi, the story places humanity and empathy at the centre of a period marked by communal violence.
Together, these films show Partition not merely as a political event, but as a human tragedy whose impact continued long after borders were drawn.
