Don’t mind me, I’m still reeling over the fact that my HBO Sundays are dragonless going forward. The channel is trying to soothe the pain by adding in some DC superheroes, but, c’mon, it’s not the same. In theaters, we have another Odyssey star releasing their second (third?!) flick of the summer (Anne Hathaway, in a dinosaur thriller). Here’s everything else.

Kristen Stewart is finally getting her stoner-girl comedy. Directed by her wife, the screenwriter Dylan Meyer, The Wrong Girls follows two best friends (Stewart and Alia Shawkat) who accidentally ingest an experimental drug that plunges these two stoners into wild situations. Rounding out the cast is a fun lineup of actors including Geena Davis, Seth Rogen, LaKeith Stanfield, Zack Fox, Cate Blanchett, and Kate McKinnon.

➽ In theaters; read the full review and about the great evolution of non-Jurassic dino movies.

HBO’s next big Sunday-night production is a prestige-TV-style show starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns with the former training the latter; yes, this is a point of tension. Even if you’re unsure about comic books, it’s worth checking out based on the creative team (Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and Ozark’s Chris Mundy) and the excellent cast, which includes Jason Ritter, Poorna Jagannathan, and Laura Linney

Andrew Patterson’s 2019 debut, The Vast of Night, a Twilight Zone–esque tale about sightings in the sky above a small New Mexico town, low-key blew my mind. His new movie, an Oklahoma-set drama about music, beekeeping, and agricultural crime, features Matthew McConaughey, a major step up in terms of star wattage. But it is no less singular, spectacular, and strange

Why not spend some sweaty August hours on a lush Australian production of Miles Franklin’s novel, last adapted as the 1979 Gillian Armstrong film, about a girl in rural Australia who dreams of being a writer? She falls in love, she rails against the unfairness of being a young woman, it was shot on location — there’s so much to like

Wanna cry? Then watch Sunny Sandler, Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, and Steve Buscemi in this coming-of-age drama about a teen who learns of her mother’s terminal-cancer diagnosis while preparing to take the lead in her high-school production of the musical Waitress. —Eric Vilas-Boas

Scovel has long been a beloved but not-quite-famous figure in stand-up comedy, and it’s time for this special to change that. It’s especially exciting for its deliciously manipulative closer, when he first plays into the sad-trauma trope of Edinburgh comedy hours and then revels in pulling the rug out from underneath it all

The geologically muscular Alan Ritchson returns as the ex-military vigilante, now in New York, where he spots a woman on the subway who may be a suicide bomber. The season lands not long after Ritchson went viral for a real-life rumble with a maybe-belligerent neighbor

“The premise is simple enough, though the feelings are big. Moody new girl Coley (Maya da Costa) moves to a small town in Oregon after the death of her mother to live with her dad (Zach Braff), an otherwise invisible presence in her life growing up, when she gets sucked into the orbit of popular girl Sonya (Myra Molloy).” —Fran Hoepfner, from our review

Heartwood: A Powerful New Noir Comic Explores Memory and Justice

    By JamesJuly 13, 20260

Some crime stories ask who committed the murder. Heartwood, a new comic book that’s the focus of a Kickstarter from innovative British independents PSYComics and Scratch Comics, asks a more uncomfortable question: why do some victims disappear twice – first from life, and then from memory?
