A recent social media action at a comic book convention has had an unexpected and delightful outcome. After a heartwarming interaction between a comic book writer and artist with a customer went viral, interest in the story and storyteller has exploded on Instagram.

The Heartwarming Moment That Started It All

On August 22, 2026, the Instagram account Slow Comics uploaded a video they filmed at a comic book convention. As the video begins, the following words can be seen onscreen: “POV: Only buying comics from Vendors with No Customers At a Comic Con.”

As the footage progresses, the person recording it begins talking with an artist and writer who goes by Orídipé about the independent comic book he wrote, created the art for, and self-published. As is the case with many artists, he practically radiated passion for the story he wanted to tell as he described his one-shot comic, Orí: Holder of the Heads.

“This is my self-published comic. It’s a Yoruba Nigerian fantasy comic. And it’s basically based on this world where people can talk to their ancestors and ask them for advice. But one day the ancestors start to attack them. So the main character is on a quest to figure out why the ancestors are upset. And he goes from family to family trying to help them reconnect. It’s all based on Nigerian art styles and African cloth patterns. Patterns are a huge, huge part of this, as you can tell… All the artwork is done by myself and I wrote the story as well. It’s called Orí: Holder of the Heads.”

After confirming that his comic Orí: Holder of the Heads tells a complete story, Orídipé reveals that he also created a related comic book called Etch. He also described the incredibly creative way he designed the companion issue. “Etch is a side story. Same characters. But the fun thing about Etch is that you can actually read it either left to right, like a normal comic, or right to left, like a manga.”

The video that easily could have completely flown under the radar ends with the operator of @slowcomics buying his own copy of both issues. The heartwarming footage feels like a clip showing two people connecting over a love of comics, driven entirely by an artist’s passion for his story.

What Happened After the Video Went Viral

After Slow Comics posted his video on Instagram, that typically would have been it. But, there was something so delightful about the footage that there have been two remarkable updates. First off, the video became a sensation and, as of the time of this writing, has more than 1.4 million likes and 22,900 comments. Second, the comics artist enjoyed an incredible surge in popularity.

After posting the first video, Slow Comics posted a follow-up in which he described how fantastic Orí: Holder of the Heads and Etch both are. In the second video, he mentioned that Orídipé had roughly 1500 Instagram followers before the viral video. Now, he has more than 189,000 followers as of this writing.

On his Instagram account, Orídipé posted his own video reacting to the stunning turn of events. In it, he expressed how thankful he was to be getting the sudden surge of support while also understandably admitting how overwhelming it felt. He also promised that he would meet the sudden surge in online orders he’d received, while noting it would take some time to meet the massive demand.

In a second reaction video, the artist confirmed that after selling out, he’d be reopening for preorders as of August 26, at 12 p.m. EST. Since that time has passed, the artist’s website can now be used to preorder both comic books.

Since social media can be a very jaded place, it truly is remarkable when feel-good stories like this one pop up. Hopefully, it is a harbinger of good things to come.
