A Honda engineer known for his gravity-defying hairstyle has drawn fresh attention online after appearing in a short Honda R&D video explaining advances in driver-assistance technology.
Shotaro Odate, a senior Honda engineer working on advanced safety technology, appeared in a 66-second presentation about improvements to hands-on steering sensors used in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The technology addresses so-called «OFF-dropout» errors, where temporary hand movements or changes in grip can cause a system to incorrectly determine that a driver is not holding the steering wheel.
Honda’s research says the updated system uses real-time calibration to account for factors including temperature, humidity and changes in grip. Testing showed a 37% reduction in OFF-dropout errors, according to the company’s research publication.
Yet for many viewers, the technology was not the most memorable part of the presentation. Odate’s sharply spiked hair, with a fringe falling across one eye, quickly became the focus of social media discussion.
From anime comparisons to automotive patents
Odate’s appearance has previously attracted comparisons with characters from series including Naruto and Dragon Ball. Reports in 2025 said he had maintained the hairstyle for several years. Odate explained that his naturally stiff hair tends to curl and that he adopted a simpler styling routine rather than spending large amounts of time arranging it.
The attention has also highlighted a career that extends well beyond his distinctive appearance.
Odate is credited with more than 250 patents related to automotive safety, with multipleors, braking technology and intelligent seat belt systems. He has also been associated with Honda SENSING 360+, the company’s advanced driver-assistance technology
Honda’s own research page lists Odate as the author of work on steering-grip detection during ADAS operation. His research focuses on improving the reliability of sensors that determine whether a driver’s hands are on the steering wheel.
The engineer behind the viral image
Odate’s public profile has grown because the contrast between his appearance and his technical credentials is unusually striking. In 2025, international media reported on the engineer after his hairstyle spread across social media, with coverage also noting his reputation for strength training. The South China Morning Post reported that Odate had appeared on a Japanese variety programme and had kept his distinctive hairstyle for at least five years.
Reports have also cited a 170-kilogram bench press as one of Odate’s fitness achievements.
