For a decade Crunchyroll has defined itself as the place anime lives after it airs — a simulcast library, not a marquee. Its acquisition of ufotable’s Witch on the Holy Night for North American theaters signals a different ambition: treating the cinema window as anime’s prestige tier rather than an occasional stunt. Partnering with Sony Pictures Entertainment, the platform is building a repeatable theatrical pipeline for Japanese animation, not booking a one-night fan event.
As Deadline first reported, Crunchyroll has taken North American rights to the feature and will run it in both the original Japanese with English subtitles and a freshly recorded English dub. Sony’s distribution arm supplies the theatrical muscle — the same corporate pairing that turned Crunchyroll from a niche streamer into Sony’s anime spearhead. The dual-format release also hedges the platform’s bet, courting subtitle purists and dub-first newcomers in the same theatrical window.
The film adapts Kinoko Nasu’s 2012 visual novel, a foundational Type-Moon text from the studio behind the Fate franchise and Tsukihime. That lineage matters: Type-Moon commands one of anime’s most devoted fanbases, and ufotable — the animation house responsible for Demon Slayer and the Fate/stay night films — brings the kind of luminous, effects-heavy craft that rewards a big screen. The source novel only reached the West with an official English localization in late 2022, a decade after its Japanese debut, and that belated arrival has stoked exactly the kind of pent-up curiosity a theatrical push can convert.
Set in the Misaki Town of the late 1980s, the story follows Aoko Aozaki, a high-schooler and apprentice magician sharing an old mansion with fellow witch Alice Kuonji as she trains toward becoming a full Magician. The visual novel’s principal cast reprises their roles, with Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko, Kana Hanazawa as Alice and Yūsuke Kobayashi as Sōjūrō Shizuki.
Witch on the Holy Night opens in Japan on November 20, 2026, before reaching United States and Canadian theaters on January 29, 2027. Crunchyroll has not detailed the scale of the rollout or whether the dubbed and subtitled versions will share screens.
ufotable’s last trip to theaters, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, proved a feature-length anime can top the global box office. Witch on the Holy Night is Crunchyroll’s wager that the crowd wasn’t there for one franchise — it was there for the format.
