Hannah Einbinder‘s voice has not been silenced since her arrest for protesting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York City on Thursday.
TheEmmy winner was one of a group of stars who convened outside the United Nations headquarters in Midtown Manhattan to protest a planned speech by Netanyahu, who has overseen the brutal military campaign in Gaza that has since expanded into southern Lebanon in the aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre.
Musicians Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, Saturday Night Live‘s Sarah Sherman, Oscar winner and indefatigable activist Susan Sarandon, and Einbinder all showed up to rebuke the speech, citing the UN’s own labeling of Israel’s war on Gaza a genocide.
Einbinder and Sarandon were both detained during the protest, and in the hours after her release, the Hacksstar re-upped her unambiguous condemnation of Netanyahu’s New York visit.
“If the pictures of my friends and me getting arrested in protest of Netanyahu’s shameful visit to New York draw attention to anything, let it be to the devastating genocidal war Israel is waging against the people of Palestine and Southern Lebanon-to the settler attacks, the home demolitions, the bombing of people as they sleep; to the crimes that happen every SINGLE day but garner almost no international press coverage,” Einbinder wrote in a statement shared to her Instagram story.
“The US government has the power to bring an end to all of this killing, pillaging, and land theft, yet instead it chooses to welcome the butcher of Gaza with open arms,” she continued. “The fact that the orchestrator of all this bloodshed is roaming freely in our cities is an indictment of BOTH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS who enable and protect architects of genocide like Netanyahu. Let us not mistake the spectacle for the story: genocide is the headline, and it is time for it to end.”

Einbinder and Sarandon have been among the most vocal advocates for the Palestinian cause amid Israel’s years-long bombardment of Gaza.
Upon winning her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in Hackslast year, Einbinder delivered the customary tributes before declaring, “Go Birds, f— ICE, and free Palestine,” before walking off the stage.
The actress received pushback from no less than the Department of Homeland Security, which, through a representative, called that seven-word statement “ugly” the following day.
Einbinder stated her reasons for attending the protest in a video shared to social media by Jewish Voice for Peace and the Sunrise Movement on Thursday.
“We are here to protest the presence of Benjamin Netanyahu who is an architect of genocide supported by funding by the United States of America,” Einbinder explained. “This is an American-Israeli genocide against Palestinians. We’re here saying no to wars on Iran and Lebanon and we are saying no to the genocide in Palestine.”
