If you ask any comic book fan what the thing they secretly desire to do is, Byron Canady said they will almost always say they’ve wanted to own a comic book store.

Canady was one of those fans who made his dream a reality by creating and opening Gulf Coast Cosmos Comics in 2020. Originally, GCCC started as an e-commerce store, but in 2021, it got its first brick-and-mortar in Houston’s Third Ward neighborhood. In 2025, it moved to its current location on Wheeler Ave. in the Third Ward.

    What’s special about it?

GCCC focuses on comics that have Black characters at the forefront.

“80% of our inventory is Black [characters],” Canady said. “In addition to that, we have a large selection of local independent comic books by local independent comic book creators.”

The shop also carries large publications such as Marvel Comics and DC Comics, as well as independent brands like Dark Horse, Image and Ignition.

Canady said moving to the Third Ward was done with intentionality.

“Everything that I do with regard to GCCC is done with intention and care for the purpose of creating an expansive and welcoming space for individuals who have been largely left out on the margins when it comes to fandom and creativity,” he said. “So, it’s not just a place for comic books, it’s a community.”

Canady said it’s why he hosts regular events, like Geek Meet, where comic book fans meet up to discuss different topics every month, ranging from media literacy to the best superhero. Other regular events include an LGBTQ+ journaling club, a monthly writing workshop, game nights and watch parties.

“The history of Third Ward, by and large, has been a community that has highlighted and supported creatives, the arts,” he said. “And when you have University of Houston and Texas Southern University in your backyard … it’s kind of a no-brainer that you would want to have that programming in your offerings.”

In July, GCCC was the host of a few Dream Con events, including meet-and-greets, book signings and an Anime Paint & Sip event.

Canady said that owning a comic book store has shown him how there has been a resurgence of excitement for physical media after a period of digital comics becoming mainstream.

“People are coming back to the stores to pick up their comic, open it up, smell it and read it,” he said. “It’s like ‘Yay, I got my copy.’”

GCCC is also a member of Ink Alliance, a national alliance of 10 Black-owned independent comic book retailers.

“It was for the purpose of expanding opportunity, ownership and representation within the industry itself,” Canady said.

The Ink Alliance recently announced that all 10 locations will carry 100 copies each—only 1,000 copies will be printed worldwide—of a limited edition comic book, “Static of the Titans.” It’s a special opportunity for the Alliance because it shows the strength in their voices, Canady said.

“Ink Alliance was formed around the idea of, collectively, our voices are stronger, and collectively, we have stronger buying power, which by and large many other comic book store retailers have utilized this same formula to create opportunities for themselves,” he said. “So we are, in turn, doing the same thing.”

Canady said he wants GCCC to serve as not only a “friendly neighborhood comic book store,” but also as a creative incubator space.

“When you set foot in this door, it will feel familiar to you, whether you’ve been in here for the first time or the 131st time. It will feel familiar to you. It is for the purpose of activating your creativity,” he said.

Canady said the store is also not just for comic book fans either.

“You love comics, that’s great, but if you also like music, we do things that you’ll enjoy with regard to music, fitness, wellness, just general entertainment,” he said. “So, we are here for three things—to entertain, educate and empower.”
