Gintama the Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames will begin streaming on Netflix on August 27, about half a year after it debuted in Japanese theaters on February 13.

“To reunite a boy with his mother, Gintoki and his friends must face the darkness lurking within the red-light district of Yoshiwara,” the Netflix Anime X/Twitter account writes in the caption for the announcement.

Gintama the Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames (Shingekijoban Gintama -Yoshiwara Daienjo-) covers the Gintamamanga‘s “Yoshiwara Enjo” arc, which was previously adapted in Episode 139 to 146 of the TV anime. Naoya Ando (Paradox Live THE ANIMATION, Kemono Friends 2 assistant director) directed the film at BN Pictures with Yoichi Fujita(the TV anime’s director) supervising.

Malaysia’s GSC cinema chain, which began general screenings for the movie last month, has the following synopsis for it:

Yoshiwara—a massive underground red-light district where the power of the law does not reach. A city of eternal night where desires swirl and the sun never shines.

In Edo, Sakata Gintoki, who runs an “Odd Jobs” shop known as the Yorozuya, meets an orphan named Seita who makes a living as a pickpocket. Seita says he is searching for his long-lost mother, and believes that Yoshiwara’s top courtesan (Oiran), Hinowa, might be her.

The courtesans of Yoshiwara are under the control of Housen, the Night King. Among the combat-loving Yato clan, Housen boasts overwhelming strength; he has seized control of Yoshiwara’s interests and enjoys vast wealth and power at his whim.

“I just want to see my mom, even if it’s only for a moment.” To grant the young boy’s small wish, Gintoki and his companions spring into action. Can their bonds illuminate this massive darkness?

The Gintama manga by Hideaki Sorachi began in 2003 and released its 77th and final tankobon volume in 2019. The action comedy manga, set in an alternate, anachronistic Edo Japan where aliens have invaded, was mainly serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, with some later chapters being published in Jump GIGA in 2019. The concluding chapters were released

The TV anime began airing in 2006 and ran until 2018 for four seasons. There were also several anime movies, including 2021’s Gintama THE FINAL and the Gintama on Theater 2D theatrical re-edit films, and an adaptation of theGintama: Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class spin-off. Crunchyroll’s synopsis for the TV show reads:

In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains and motor bikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions.
