France vs Morocco World Cup quarterfinal sends crypto markets into overdrive, from Mbappe meme coins to Sorare NFTs

Kylian Mbappe’s on-field dominance continues to fuel speculative trading in unauthorized tokens, rare NFTs, and fan engagement platforms across the crypto ecosystem

The World Cup quarterfinals are here, and as France squares off against Morocco with Kylian Mbappe leading the attack, the ripple effects extend well beyond the pitch. Crypto markets tied to the tournament, from meme coins bearing the striker’s name to NFT platforms where his digital cards trade for five figures, are seeing the kind of volume spikes that make degens and sports fans equally jumpy

The Mbappe effect on crypto markets

Unauthorized Solana-based meme tokens like $MBAPPE have become a recurring sideshow during major football events. The token peaked at a market cap exceeding $460 million back in August 2024, driven by pure speculative mania tied to the striker’s performances. These tokens carry zero official backing, zero utility, and zero connection to Mbappe himself

The current quarterfinal matchup has reignited interest in these speculative assets, with trading volumes climbing as the stakes on the pitch get higher

Sorare, NFTs, and the legitimate side of sports crypto

The French forward became an ambassador and investor for Sorare, the fantasy football NFT platform, back in June 2022. Rare Mbappe NFTs on Sorare have sold for up to $66,850. The World Cup format, where every match could be a player’s last of the tournament, tends to amplify scarcity premiums on these cards

Sorare’s model lets users build fantasy lineups using NFT player cards that fluctuate in value based on real-world performance. Mbappe’s dual role as both an investor and the subject of the platform’s most valuable cards creates an interesting dynamic. Every goal he scores doesn’t just move the match, it moves markets

Fan tokens and the Chiliz question

One notable gap in the crypto-sports landscape is the absence of dedicated national fan tokens for either France or Morocco on the Chiliz/Socios platform. Despite Chiliz powering fan tokens for major club teams worldwide, neither national federation had launched a token as of July 2026

That hasn’t stopped the broader Chiliz ecosystem from benefiting. Trading volumes across the platform surged during the tournament’s knockout stage, as fans looked for any available proxy to express their allegiance through their wallets

What this means for crypto investors

The 2026 World Cup represents a meaningful step forward in how crypto integrates with mainstream sports. Kraken is serving as the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the tournament, building on NFT initiatives that began during the 2022 edition in Qatar

Unauthorized meme coins will keep appearing every time a star athlete trends on social media. The $460 million peak and subsequent collapse of unauthorized tokens illustrates the risk for retail traders of mistaking a liquidity event for a lasting market. By the time you’ve read the headline about a token pumping, the insiders who created it are likely already heading for the exits
