- The scheduled downtime started at 4 a.m. ET, with matchmaking disabled at 3:30 a.m.

Users took to social media to complain Fortnite was down early this morning.
According to Downdetector, users began complaining about the app shortly after 3 a.m., Sept. 3.
Fortnight posted on X it was updating to V42.10 at 4 a.m. ET to bring new Battle Royale gameplay, as well as new fixes and improvements.
Users report early-morning problems with Fortnite
Shortly after 3 a.m., Downdetector started receiving reports from users having problems using Fortnite.
‘Game on!’ Fortnite announces servers are up
Fortnite said downtime for the scheduled maintenance started at 4 a.m. ET, with matchmaking stopping at 3:30 a.m.
Shortly before 7 a.m., the company announced “Game on! Servers are up — see what’s new.”
What’s new with Fortnite?
Here’s what is new after servers came back up:
Battle Royale: “Today’s update brings back a reworked Sweeper Shotgun, drops new Loot Hacks to customize, new Overrides to break the rules, new Sprites and Sprite improvements, bug fixes and more.”
OG Season X: “Reality is bending, timelines are colliding, and you’re dropping into the middle of it. A Reality Wave sweeps across the OG Island, transforming familiar locations and bringing in Rift Zones, new items, weapons and more. Fortnite OG Season X arrives today, Sept. 3.”
Arenas V42.10 updates: Updates included the following new features:
- Auras: “Auras are now enabled in Arenas!”
- Elite Zadie Gameplay Commentary during the match.
- Tournaments: “We’ve enabled the scoring badge that shows your current point total in a tournament. This includes highlighting when points are added to your score during the match.”
Save the World: “Today’s update kicks off the new Ventures Season, reopens the Dungeons, reworks Refuel the Homebase, and delivers a stack of bug fixes and improvements.”
What types of problems were users having with Fortnite?
Most of the problems reported during the overnight hours were with game launch, followed by server connection and game play.
Comments on Downdetector at the time included:
- “Ping In-game on PC is 4-5x higher than normal, & lag so bad its costing me wins, as im frozen in place & when it catches up, im dead & lost the game….poor form…poor form indeed fortnite.”
- “Can’t log in to Fortnite on my switch 2. Was watching friends play until they finished their round. But got kicked out. The lobby was bugged. Closed the game. Started it up again and got a red error screen. Started it again and it faked loading. It kept searching for servers.”
- “constant errors when opening fortnite”
- “kicked me out after match and made me queue”

@FortnightStatus posted on X downtime for V42.10 would begin at 4 a.m. ET, with matchmaking ending shortly before, “bringing all new Battle Royale gameplay, OG Season X and a ton of fixes and improvements!”

Fortnite is a popular online video game and virtual platform developed by Epic Games.
Battle Royale is one of the many games available and involves being dropped “into an ever-changing Island with 99 other players for the ultimate test of skill and strategy. Survive the ever-encroaching Storm and outrun, outshoot, and outmaneuver opponents to be the last player standing and claim the prized Victory Royale.”
