#5: Doomquest #4
‘Doomquest’ #4 takes an emotional step back for Victor’s ‘happy ending’
Doomquest #4 turns its time-travel premise inward, giving Doctor Doom perhaps the most difficult challenge yet: the opportunity to live the life he might have had with Valeria. Ryan North spends much of the issue making that alternate existence feel genuinely happy and fulfilling, which gives the eventual turn tremendous weight. Francesco Mobili’s double-page layouts beautifully convey entire stretches of Victor’s life, helping sell the idea that this isn’t some fleeting fantasy. The result is a surprisingly emotional Doctor Doom story that ultimately arrives at a cold, tragic reminder of exactly who Victor is.

#4: Hellraiser: The Onanistic Ritual #1
‘Hellraiser: Resurrections – The Onanistic Ritual’ #1 review
Hellraiser: Resurrections – The Onanistic Ritual #1 understands what makes Hellraiser so deeply unsettling. Zac Thompson finds horror in isolation, desire, and the poisonous corners of online culture, then lets the Cenobites push those impulses somewhere far more grotesque. Jim is an awful yet strangely human figure, and his descent gives the supernatural horror a disturbing real-world foundation. Gavin Mitchell and the color team deliver plenty of gruesome imagery, particularly once Chatterer’s journey through Hell takes hold. Some of that journey can be difficult to decipher, and the cartoonier qualities of the art occasionally soften moments that should sting harder. Even so, this is an unnerving, thoughtful, and seriously nasty piece of horror.

#2: Batman: Bad Seeds – Gotham Central #1
‘Batman: Bad Seeds – Gotham Central’ #1 review: the plant beat
At just two issues, Batman: Bad Seeds: Gotham Central may not be the most consequential of the Bad Seeds books, but as a trial run for a new Gotham Central series it’s pretty much a slam dunk. Pairing this alongside the potential sister title of Gotham General gives me the feeling that DC is testing out the market for more street-level, “human” Batman books, and if this miniseries does well enough to warrant more of these street-level stories, especially from Cantwell and Phillips, I’m there.
