Carrie Ann Inabafound herself fending off yet another wave of boos from the Dancing With the Starsaudience after she criticized Harry Shum Jr.‘s Viennese Waltz on Tuesday.
The 58-year-old judge shared some words of wisdom for theGrey’s Anatomy star following his and pro partner Jenna Johnson’s performance of “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls during week 2’s “Viral Hits Night.”
“You are an amazing performer, and watching that is always… I feel lucky to be able to watch it up close,” Inaba began. “But what’s missing — or what’s happening — is it’s out of balance, because the parts when you let go, you let so far go and you’re so amazing, and then when you’re back and hold, you’re a little timid, and you seem uncertain.”
As a result, she noted that the routine felt “imbalanced” from start to finish, adding, “So, if you can try to bridge that gap a little bit, I think that’s what’s going to make it great.”
She also encouraged Shum to “zip it up,” which sparked a loud groan from the audience. “You can boo me, that’s okay,” Inaba said in response. “You can boo as long as you vote!”
Shum, for his part, defended the judge from the backlash, telling the crowd, “I wanna hear this. I wanna hear this!”
While Inaba had some thoughts on Shum and Johnson’s performance, her fellow judges, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough, were much kinder in their critiques. “Overall it wasn’t bad,” Tonioli said.
Hough, in turn, went on to describe Shum’s dance as “beautiful.”

Shum and Johnson earned 18 points for their waltz, a dip from their week 1 score of 21. They were the third act to receive the solid score alongside Summer House star Ciara Miller and Brandon Armstrong, and Savannah Bananas athlete Jackson Olson and Emma Slater.
All three teams made it through the elimination process, with Giada De Laurentiis and her partner, Alan Bersten, being asked to leave the ballroom at the end of the episode.
Dancing With the Starsairs Tuesdays on ABC and Disney+ at 8 p.m. ET/PT and streams next day on Hulu.
