The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen uses frame generation
Producer Naoto Oyama spoke about this in length in an interview with Famitsu. While the game targets 30 frames per second, frame generation lets you “play with smooth visuals equivalent to 60 FPS.” It will be possible to turn it on and off at any point.
Here’s the full except from the interview:
I heard that this demo version achieves 60 FPS equivalent visuals using a frame generation function on the Switch 2 version. Could you tell us about the background and mechanism of its implementation?
First, in the Switch 2 version of Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, the base frame rate is targeted at 30 FPS in both handheld and TV modes. If you turn on frame generation in this state, a function that interpolates frames will be activated, allowing you to play with smooth visuals equivalent to 60 FPS.
However, since this function interpolates between frames, there are times when interpolation is difficult in certain situations, and we have confirmed cases where a slight ghosting effect remains. Nevertheless, we judged that the overall gameplay experience would not be significantly impaired, so we made it possible for those who prioritize frame rate to turn it on. In the final product, you will be able to switch it on and off, but the demo version here has it fixed on. We would love to hear your impressions of playing in that state.
Is there a difference in mechanism between 60 FPS in the PC version and frame generation in the Switch 2?
It’s pretty close. When you output 60 FPS natively, each frame is drawn individually and displayed as is.
Frame generation is a function that calculates and interpolates “what would happen if there was a frame here” between frames. The idea is that the whole thing, including this interpolation, is at 60 FPS.
If the interpolated part is wrong, the display may break down slightly, but the overall frequency of this is very low, so when you play normally, the flaws in the interpolation are not noticeable, and we think you will be strongly impressed by how smoothly it moves and how comfortable it is to play. It
is a technology that has been used quite commonly in PC games, but this is the first time that Capcom has added it for the Nintendo Switch 2. It’s a somewhat challenging feature, so we would appreciate it if you would try it out and get a feel for it.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen launches for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 9, 2026. We recently went hands-on with the game and you can check out our thoughts here.
