It’s been a pretty challenging few years for the Star Wars franchise. Arguably the most well-known movie franchise of all time, that galaxy so far, far away has seen better days – and it largely stems from both the overall lack of clear direction after the Skywalker Saga concluded and the dilution of Star Wars itself responses)
Disney and Lucasfilm tried to course-correct this year by taking The Mandalorian and Groguto the big screen, marking Star Wars’ return to movie theaters for the first time in seven years. Unfortunately, the film underperformed (despite a slight overperformance in its opening weekend) and now holds the record for the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie of all time. Where that leaves Mando and Grogu’s future remains to be seen, but right now it’s looking like that might not be on Disney Plus – as a recent update from the platform itself seems to have confirmed the rumors that the biggest Star Wars show of all time is finished.
Disney quietly confirms that The Mandalorian’s cancellation
It sounds like The Mandalorian season 4 won’t be happening after all. While the future of the first Star Wars Disney Plus show has been up in the air ever since the studios abandoned plans for a fourth season in favor of a standalone movie, there hadn’t been a definitive answer as to what the next step for the characters involved might be. Well, it looks like we might have gotten our answer from Disney itself (in a surprisingly quiet fashion).
A new official behind-the-scenes featurette on the Star Wars YouTube channel (aptly titled Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Behind The Scenes) features clips from The Mandalorian while describing how they brought the character’s voice to life, officially listing the show’s run as 2019 – 2023. As the show’s third season streamed on the Disney Plus platform in 2023 (back when a fourth season seemed inevitable), this suggests that it was indeed the final season of the series.
Needless to say that this comes as a blow to Star Wars fans who were hoping that Disney and Lucasfilm would simply revert to original plans of making a fourth season of the series after the film approach didn’t boast the results they were hoping for. After all, even though The Mandalorian and Grogu underperformed at the box office, it still made $345 million in its theatrical run, which is a clear indicator that there are still demands for Din Djarin and the child known affectionately as “Baby Yoda”.

Jon Favreau recently confirmed that all involved had a plan for The Mandalorian season 4 before they ultimately had to come up with a more standalone story for the announced feature film instead. This reflects Disney and Lucasfilm’s attempts to make Star Wars exclusive to movie theaters again. While the array of Disney Plus shows kept the lights on during an era when people weren’t going to movie theaters, the overexposure of that galaxy so far, far away risked watering down the Star Wars brand as a whole.
While The Mandalorian‘s first two seasons were critically acclaimed, this spawned a multitude of spinoffs and offshoots – some directly tied to Dave Filoni’s Mando-Verse and some carrying on story arcs from the franchise’s glory days. From The Mandalorian came The Book of Boba Fett,Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew, while we also got the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Acolyte, and Andor. The various highs and lows from the Disney Plus conveyer belt of shows – and the long wait between seasons – resulted in the third season underperforming with fans and critics.
Right now, the future of the Star Wars franchise is unclear in the long-term. 2027 will bring the long-awaited, long-delayedAhsoka season 2 (which finally arrives on January 20) as well as the next film in the saga: Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy (which arrives in movie theaters on May 28, 2027). It’s unclear right now if Ahsoka could get a third season, but given how long it has taken it to get to the screen, and the waning popularity of the Mando-Verse projects, it’s probably unlikely – which is a darn shame.
There are still hopes for a Mando-Verse movie, which would bring the characters and events of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew together to wrap up their respective arcs. Filoni has been working on that one for some time but, considering that he just recently took over as Lucasfilm’s new president (and it’s unclear as to where the Mando-Verse story is going next), it might be some time for that to come to fruition – if it even does.
Honestly, if Disney really doesn’t greenlight The Mandalorian season 4 at another time, then the crossover movie is probably the right way to go. But considering how much audiences fell in love with Pedro Pascal’s bounty hunter and the child he has protected along the way, a fourth season should still be on the cards. Who knows; maybe one day it will be.
