The video game franchise gets the animation adaptation treatment for Disney Channel and Disney+, developed in partnership with the game’s creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix.
Kingdom Hearts(working title), an original anime series, has been greenlit for Disney Channel and Disney+, developed in partnership with video game creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix. Disney announced the series and released a teaser image this past Friday night at D23. No release date was announced.
The series reimagines the games with a brand-new story that expands the Kingdom Hearts universe while celebrating its characters. Nomura is on board as a contributor.
A series of role-playing games created through the collaboration of Disney and Square Enix, Square Co. and Disney Interactive released the first Kingdom Hearts on PlayStation 2 in 2002. That game put more than 100 Disney characters — among them figures from Aladdin, Tarzan, Alice in Wonderland, The Lion King and The Nightmare Before Christmas — alongside Final Fantasy characters in an epic adventure about a 14-year-old named Sora who travels with Donald Duck and Goofy. Nomura directed and designed the characters. The series has shipped over 39 million units worldwide.

Disney also released a trailer for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV game coming next year quite the animated mashup:
