Cowichan kicks off Culture Days, an annual national initiative created to celebrate arts and heritage, on Sept. 18 with a free film screening of Walking Through The Fire: Sultans of String – a Visual Albumat the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre at 7 p.m.
In the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and Final Report, which calls for Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to work together to show a path forward, a Northern Cree powwow group, Crystal Shawanda, Leela Gilday, and a dozen other Indigenous artists unite with ‘roots’ band Sultans of String for the creation of Walking Through the Fire. Sultans of String are described as a fiercely independent band known for inspiring those around them.
“We are opening doors for each other, as Indigenous peoples, as settler peoples,” said collaborator and violist with Métis Fiddler Quartet Alyssa Delbaere-Sawchuk. “This project is about creating connections and spaces to learn from each other.”
This combined album and film show a collection of collaborations between both the roots group and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit artists from across Turtle Island.

Culture Days continues with events throughout the Cowichan region until Oct. 4.
On Sept. 20, the Arts Council of Ladysmith and District invite you to draw, paint, and write self-portraits at the Arts & Heritage Hub from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On Sept. 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. join Cari Burdett at the Lila Music and Nature Centre for their first choir session of the season. Join in and try it out.
On Sept. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m., the Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society will teach attendees the art of the Coast Salish bone game Slahal, a traditional Indigenous team game involving guessing, drumming, singing, and strategy.
On Sept. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society will be celebrating the opening of their WildWings Nest Box Show at Just Jakes in Duncan with 40 artist-painted nest boxes on display.
On Oct. 2 from 4 to 6 p.m., the Cowichan Community Centre hosts a Cultural Connections Activity Night which will offer up not only the chance to meet new people and build community but to dive into diverse activities such as Chinese calligraphy and henna, plus cultural music, dancing and more.
On Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Cowichan Wooden Boat Society invites all to get on board to celebrate Quw’utsun culture. The day will feature an Indigenous market and a tea and treats social hour on their patio catered by a local Indigenous group. The highlight will be the three hour-long teachings held on the patio throughout the day.
On Oct. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m., the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre will host an art talk in the Lobby Gallery with visual artist Chantey Dayal as she gets both informative and personal while sharing the cultural influences of her work, and the moving stories behind her paintings.
