Spotted: the cast ofCrew Girlwith clear eyes and full hearts—so they can’t lose.
Before the Netflix series officially hit the platform Sept. 10, its stars shared insight into why the series is being likened to aGossip GirlmeetsFriday Night Lightsdrama—with its own spin.
“It’s upper class,”Kyle Clark, who plays Easton Prep scholarship student Cam Dillinger, told E! News’Erin Lim Rhodesin an exclusive interview alongside his castmates. “Everyone is from richer backgrounds and that being clashed with a sports drama, I think that’s where that collaboration takes place.”
Beyond just the sports element,Miku Martineau, who plays titular crew girl Teagan Tao, noted that the Netflix series has someFNLelements when it comes to “the family dynamics, the pressure.”
However, the similarities pale in comparison to the new elements thatCrew Girlis bringing to the beloved young adult genre.
“I think rowing is the really new aspect that we’re bringing,” Martineau posited, “Rowing is a sport that involves so much emotion and so much tension and respect and communication. All of those things are great qualities of a coming of age story.”

And while her character has to face some Blair Waldorf-level snobbery, Martineau emphasized that she had a “blast” channeling her inner elite athlete for her role as the new coxswain of a men’s rowing team.
“I had no complaints,” the 21-year-old mused, “because I was doing what I loved and learning a new sport is so much fun. And also, being in the sun, getting a nice tan, swimming in the water.”
Indeed, Clark concurred that bringing the drama to the lake rather than under the football flood lights or the MET steps will really set the show apart.
“Rowing being a sport that hasn’t been introduced to audiences really,” he posited. “So that’s something new and exciting that people are going to be stoked to see for the first time.”
Meanwhile,Sam Braun—the actor behind wealthy golden boy Josh Regis—teased how the actors were able to build the convincing love triangle between Josh, Teagan and Cam that would put Blair, Serena and Nate as well as the endless other unsuccessfulGossip Girlpairings to shame.
“So much of the cast are based out of Vancouver,” Braun explained. “So we all knew each other before starting the show and I kind of feel like that’s like a really special chemistry.”
But trust, Martineau is first and foremost Team Teagan.
“I think we all go through a lot of paths and navigation in our young adult lives so I think it’s great to have a story where a lot of kids can relate,” she told E!, “Whether it’s with new friendships or being an underdog or being the person who’s put on a pedestal and has a lot of pressure or people who are still navigating relationships.”
Whoever you come away fromCrew Girlsupporting, Martineau assured that in the series, “There’s something for everybody.”
