Coles’ collectible glass container range has quickly taken fans by storm thanks to a small detail.

The supermarket has been running a promotion for the last two months, where shoppers could get an item in the collection for free if they racked up enough points.

The containers look like your run-of-the-mill glass tubs for leftovers, but the lids have an ingenious add-on that solves a major problem.

There’s a small dial at the top with numbers you can set to indicate the date the food was stored.

Yahoo’s Head of News and Lifestyle, Belinda Grant-Geary, picked up a few of the containers recently and said it was a “game-changer”.

“I am constantly questioning when things went in the fridge and throwing food out,” she said.

“But this makes it really simple. I know you could write it on the container, but I just never did. Now it’s built in and simple.

“I don’t know if this has been on a lot of other containers, as I admittedly normally get cheapies.

“But it was about $52 dollars worth of containers for free.”

According to Oz Harvest, Aussies waste around 7.6 million tonnes of food each year, which is roughly 300kg per person.

How can Aussies get Coles’ collectible glass containers?

The collectibles range launched on May 27, and customers can earn a glass container credit for every $20 spent in a single transaction when they scan or enter their registered Flybuys in-store and online.

However, this excludes the Coles app.

Once people collect enough credits, they can be swapped for one of the containers.

People can also use a mix of credits and cash to pay for the items, or pay for them outright.

    • Manual vacuum pump for 14 credits or $14

    • 370ml mini rectangular glass container with lid for 20 credits or $20

    • Two-pack 170ml mini round glass containers with lids for 24 credits or $24

    • 690ml small glass container with lid for 28 credits or $28

    • 950ml snal lid to-go glass container for 34 credits or $34

    • 1.1L medium glass container with lid for 38 credits or $38

    • 2.2L glass cookware dish with lid for 50 credits or $50

Customers can also earn extra points when buying from 23 brands, including Kellogg’s, Colgate, Palmolive, Connoisseur, and Finish.

The promotion will end on August 4, but you can redeem your glass container credits until August 11.
