NEW DELHI: Cinépolis India has decided that watching Spider-Man swing across the screen is no longer enough; fans should be able to take a piece of him home too. The country’s first international cinema exhibitor has partnered with Sony Pictures Entertainment India to roll out a range of limited-edition Spider-Man collectibles across all its screens nationwide from 24 July, timed to land just before Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theatres on 30 July. It is a tidy piece of commercial choreography, and one that says as much about the state of Indian cinema retail as it does about the film itself.

The logic here is straightforward and, on the evidence, overdue. Ticket sales alone have become a thin margin business for exhibitors everywhere, squeezed by streaming competition and rising content costs. Merchandise tie-ins let a chain monetise the emotional pull of a franchise rather than just the seat it fills for two hours. Devang Sampat, managing director of Cinépolis India, framed the tie-up as part of a push to elevate the moviegoing experience beyond the screen itself, which is corporate speak for a genuinely sound instinct: fandom sells more than tickets if you let it.

Sony, for its part, gets a distribution network with real scale to lean on. Cinépolis operates 491 screens across India under the Cinépolis, Cinépolis VIP and Fun Cinemas brands, giving Sony’s collectibles a pan-India footprint on day one rather than a patchy rollout confined to a few metros. Shony Panjikaran, general manager and head of Sony Pictures Releasing International in India, called it a chance for audiences to celebrate the world’s most iconic superhero, which is marketing language, certainly, but not an exaggerated one; Spider-Man remains one of the most bankable properties in the Sony stable, and Brand New Day arrives with Tom Holland back as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, releasing simultaneously in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, a six-language spread that signals real confidence in the film’s pan-India appeal.

What makes this tie-up worth watching is less the merchandise itself than the template it sets. Cinépolis has spent recent years building out experiential formats, VIP luxury halls, a kids-only auditorium in Cinépolis Junior, and the Club Cinépolis loyalty programme, and has picked up recognition for it, including the IMAX Big Cine award for India’s top multiplex chain. Layering franchise merchandise on top of that experiential push is a logical next step rather than a gimmick. If the Spider-Man collaboration performs well, expect Indian exhibitors to treat merchandising tie-ins as a standard release-day playbook rather than a novelty, turning cinema lobbies into a genuine retail opportunity rather than just a ticket counter with popcorn on the side.
