Chiefs News: Chiefs fans rank second in Nielsen ‘fandom index’

The latest Chiefs news, brought fresh to you every morning!

    The latest

Kansas City Chiefs fans have been loud and proud for a long time. It’s no surprise that a recent Nielsen study found them in the top 2 among all NFL fan bases.

The only team that ranked higher isn’t too big of a surprise: the Buffalo Bills have a habit of topping Kansas City in empty, meaningless matchups.

Nielsen ranks Chiefs fans second in ‘ NFL Fandom Index’ | FOX 2

Nielsen used this study to measure the best fanbases in the NFL beyond their typical ratings scale. These were following the criteria’s to determine the best fans:

    Apparel purchases
    General interest levels
    Live event attendance
    Betting intent
    Social media engagement
    Radio listenership
    Streaming habits
    Linear TV viewership

Kansas City was ranked second in the fandom index with a score of 194, just behind Buffalo, which had a score of 208, and ahead of Green Bay’s 171, reflecting a trend of mid-sized towns showing ardent love for their teams.

Five Observations from Monday’s Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/17 | The Mothership

    2. Safety Alohi Gilman hauled in an interception during 11-on-11 drills.

Gilman tallied an interception at the goal line during an 11-on-11 period early in Monday’s practice. The veteran safety was playing over the middle of the field when the pass – which may have been tipped at the line – fell short of its target and feel into Gilman’s waiting grasp.

Elsewhere on defense, cornerback Nohl Williams logged a pass breakup on a contested throw in the flat earlier in the aforementioned 11-on-11 period. Defensive tackle Peter Woods also made a play during the segment with a batted pass at the line of scrimmage.

Did the Chiefs just give away plans of their offensive scheme changes? | The Kansas City Star

Among the 23 designed rushes, the quarterback began under center on 16 of them, a rate of 69.6%. The Chiefs ran just seven times from the shotgun (30.4%).

The statistical production doesn’t all that mean much, but I will share them anyway. On Saturday, the 16 under-center carries produced 63 yards (3.9 yards per carry). They ran seven times for 17 yards in the shotgun (2.4 yards per carry).

My best guess for the Chiefs’ starting slot corner/nickel defender is “safety” Chris Roland-Wallace. Rookie Jadon Canady is a long-term investment as a slot defender, leaving Kader Kohou in an odd spot. Kohou could feasibly be the Chiefs’ best slot corner, or he could be a surprise cutdown casualty. That decision could also be impacted by L’Jarius Sneed’s health and KC’s need for another core special teamer, which would favor Kevin Knowles or Melvin Smith.

Ultimately, I think this group truly comes down to the wire. One of these NFL-quality depth corners will probably miss the cut in favor of the Chiefs’ preferred special teams ace; it’s just a matter of who trades places

The Chiefs gave undrafted tackle Khalil Benson a shot. Now he’s helping to protect Patrick Mahomes | Associated Press

Benson was similarly overlooked coming out of Southaven High School, which sits just across the Mississippi line from Memphis, Tennessee. He wound up going to Indiana but tore his ACL during preseason practices, forcing him to redshirt that season. He did not play at all the following year, which was the season played amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Benson finally played in 2022, including five starts for the Hoosiers at right guard, and he started all 12 games the next year, when it seemed as if his star was ascending. But then coach Tom Allen was fired after a 3-9 finish and Benson transferred to Colorado, where he played nine games for coach Deion Sanders and protected his son and quarterback, Shedeur Sanders.

Jaydn Ott and 4 more Kansas City Chiefs players I want to see more of in preseason Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers | A to Z Sports

The undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma followed his running backs coach, DeMarco Murray, to Kansas City. Frankly, Ott didn’t disappoint in his first performance with the team. While he didn’t get any carries on Saturday, he had the longest reception of the day at 27 yards. He went 2-of-3 receiving for 40 yards total, which topped all Chiefs receivers on the day.

Most of his work came late in the game, which is precisely why we need to see more of him. His performance as a receiver was equal to, if not better than, running back Brashard Smith, who saw snaps with the second-team offense and was getting snaps ahead of rookie running back Emmett Johnson.

O.J. Brigance, Ravens’ ‘beloved legend,’ dies at 56 after ALS fight | ESPN

O.J. Brigance, a former Baltimore Ravens linebacker and the team’s longtime adviser in player engagement, has died 19 years after being diagnosed with ALS. He was 56.

The Ravens announced Brigance’s death Monday.

Brigance, who won a Super Bowl with Baltimore in 2000, served as an inspiration to the organization for nearly two decades with his determination to fight the disease and surpass the initial prognosis.

How fast can Daniel Jones go? It’s the last question in his return from Achilles tear | The Athletic

Now, watching Jones at practice, there’s no hint of the injury to the casual observer. Wide receiver Josh Downs said Jones looked so good at the start of camp that he forgot about the injury. Two teamying Jones has looked like he never suffered an injury, let alone the sort that can be devastating for professional athletes

NFL Network: Saints rookie WR Jordyn Tyson (Hamstring) expected to miss 2 months | NFL.com

Receiver Jordyn Tyson will miss approximately two months due to a hamstring injury, NFL Network Insiders Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport reported on Monday.

Tyson, the No. 8 overall pick in April’s draft, initially suffered the injury in practice last week and sought multiple medical opinions prior to Monday’s prognosis, per Garafolo. The injury is not related to the hamstring ailments previously affected Tyson in the spring, head coach Kellen Moore said last week.

Chiefs Preseason Week 1 snap count analysis: Jaden Hicks gets extended time

Fourth-year defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah played the fourth-most snaps (27) of all Chiefs players on defense. However, only 19 of those reps occurred with the former Kansas State Wildcat aligned on the edge.

The other eight snaps were spent lined up further inside, in the B gap That’s notable because no other defensive end aligned anywhere but over or outside the tackle
