The European Union has designated ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox as major platforms with over 45 million users in the region, meaning all three will now be subject to stricter rules under the Digital Services Act (DSA), reports Bloomberg.
The European Commission has classified ChatGPT as a very large online search engine, whilst Roblox and Reddit are classified as very large online platforms.
Under the DSA, platforms and search engines with more than 45 million users in the EU must tackle illegal and harmful content, as well as submit transparency reports, provide detailed risk mitigation plans and pay an annual fee to the EU.
The DSA aims to protect children online, which is particularly relevant in the case of the game Roblox, which has repeatedly come under criticism for the measures the developer takes to protect its users. Children have even been drawn into gambling.
The company has recently introduced stricter controls over who children communicate with and which game rooms are available to them, and is also focusing more on advertising, which the DSA is required to make more transparent, particularly when it is aimed at children.
Breaches of the DSA are punishable by a fine of up to 6 per cent of annual revenue.
