Anyone Could Do What the Dodgers Did To Get Skubal
Alanna Rizzo is tired of the excuses from other franchises in the MLB.
As the 2026 Major League Baseball season somehow draws to a close, one of the most bizarre and inexplicable stories is the saga of Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte.
Marte, long one of the best players in baseball and a pivotal part of a team pushing for a wild card spot, decided not to show up to a game between the Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox at Fenway. He didn’t tell anyone, including his teammates, manager, front office or coaching staff, that he wouldn’t be at the ballpark. Didn’t have a solid excuse ready, or a solid explanation, other than revealing a few days later that he was going for an MRI on his knee.
His manager, Torey Lovullo, admitted that he felt “betrayed” by Marte’s absence, and his teammates were clear that they also did not appreciate the fact that he didn’t show up. The Diamondbacks’ front office was also disappointed, saying it was a “complete mystery” and that the entire incident was “bizarre.”

Marte eventually met with Lovullo and team executives at Chase Field in Phoenix, apologizing for his behavior and reaffirming his commitment to the team. And on Monday night, he finally made his return to the dugout as the Diamondbacks start a big series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Before the game, Marte answered questions from the media, including one in which he addressed how he’d handle speaking to the rest of the clubhouse.

“I’m going to stand in front of my teammates like a man,” he said. “I’m going to ask for forgiveness. We’re human, we all commit mistakes.”
As for what happened to lead to Marte’s unexcused absence? Well, that’s still unclear.
“A moment of frustration,” he explained. “No one made the decision for me, I’m the one that made the decision to not show up. I get along really well with Torey, and in that instance I failed him by not showing up,” he added.
Given that Marte missed so much time during a playoff race, fans were always going to have a difficult time accepting his absence. He was asked about that too, whether he had a message for the Diamondbacks’ fan base after what happened, but Marte shook his head without giving an explanation.
Well, those same fans clearly weren’t thrilled about it. When Marte came up to the plate for his first at-bat, he was met with a chorus of boos. Boos that got louder after he grounded out in his first plate appearance.

After the game, Marte explained that he hadn’t understood the phrasing of the question asking what he’d like to say to the fans.
“Going back to the press conference, when the question was made to me, I didn’t really quite understand the word that was used at that moment,” he said. “I’m never going to stop loving my fans, and that’s what I want them to understand.”
English isn’t Marte’s first language, and he relies on an interpreter to talk to the media, so it’s very possible he didn’t fully understand the question. But his hat choice for postgame media availability raised some eyebrows and gave some cause to doubt whether that explanation was fully accurate.
“May the bridges I burn light the way” is certainly a choice for someone who missed two weeks’ worth of games late in the season.

Marte has missed games in the past, and it’s very possible that there are other mental health issues at work here, not to mention potential off-the-field problems. Supporting someone as they deal with off-field problems, personal issues, or other family concerns is part of fandom and sports in general. It’s hard, though, for fans to have grace when they aren’t given much explanation, justification or apology.
But if Marte leads Arizona back to the playoffs, all might be forgiven sooner rather than later.
