Christopher Nolan’s 2026 film The Odyssey comes out in theaters on July 17th, and the hype for this movie has been a long time building. The film adapts to screen the epic poem of the ancient Greek writer Homer, following King Odysseus’s arduous journey home to reunite with his family at the end of the Trojan War

I think something that makes this film so noteworthy is what a classic The Odyssey has become. Scholars have dated its writing to around 725-675 BCE. To this day, it still impacts literacy discourse, as well as pop culture. A testament to the influence of The Odyssey can be seen through the use of the title in everyday conversations. When I hear someone describe a difficult travel experience, I often refer to it as an odyssey. When a word becomes integrated into common vernacular as its own phrase, you know it’s made an impact.

The upcoming film promises a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon as Odysseus, along with Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, Charlize Theron, and more, so it’s sure to make for an amazing adaptation. While Homer’s original epic consists of 24 books of dense text, graphic novels offer a great alternative to accessing books like these. The grandiose misadventures and cosmic characters of Greek mythology also lend themselves well to the moving illustrations of graphic novels.

If you’re like me and want to catch up on your Greek mythology before you go see The Odysseyin theaters, I’ve gathered a collection of comic book retellings of Greek myths. Some touch upon characters and history related to The Odyssey, while others expand upon a variety of Greek gods and goddesses
