After more than 40 years on our screens, it’s no surprise Elaine C Smith is often recognised in the street.

The twist is, these days it’s not as herself but as Christine O’Neill, the character she plays in the hit TV show Two Doors Down.

People just seem to know who Christine is.

“The amount of people that walk up to me and say ‘do you know my granny? Do you know my auntie?'”, she jokes.

Christine is far from glamorous, but she’s a very recognisable type – a classic nosy neighbour who, as the saying goes, is more than capable of starting a fight in an empty room.

And for a show where very little happens (one episode revolved around a character deciding how to share his tray of donuts) she’s a key character who’s at the centre of many of the programme’s plots.

Smith and the entire cast of the most recent series are following in the footsteps of Still Game and Gary Tank Commander and making the move to a stage show at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro arena.

The play recreates 14 Latimer Crescent – home to Beth and Eric Baird, played by Arabella Weir and Alex Norton – and the various neighbours and relations who find any excuse to interrupt their peace and quiet.

“It’s very different to being in the studio, where no-one’s here or watching,” says Doon Mackichan, who plays glamorous and self-centred Cathy Whyte.

“It’s still a show where there’s truth and intimacy, but you’re going to have 10,000 people laughing, so we’re going to have to really change up the timing.

“We’re still in our sitting room. The audience are eavesdropping.”

The premise of the stage show is that Eric and Beth invite the neighbours round for a big announcement from their adult son Ian, played by Jamie Quinn.

Could it be a long-awaited wedding to his partner Gordon (Kieran Hodgson)?

Whatever it is will inevitably be overshadowed by the domestic anarchy that Christine, Colin (Jonathan Watson) and Cathy, as well as Alan and Michelle, the young couple from across the road played by Graeme “Grado” Stevely and Joy McAvoy, always bring to the living room.

The play debuts ahead of the eighth series of the show coming to the BBC

Two Doors Down began in 2013 as a one-off pilot.

Created by Simon Carlyle and Gregor Sharp, it was another two years before it got the green light from the BBC. Since then, it has become a word of mouth hit, spawning seven series and three Christmas specials.

One of those moved the action from living room to coffee shop and focused on Christine’s character and her unspoken worries about being alone for Christmas.

Smith says: “I remember Joy – who plays Michelle – said that when she watched that episode, which ended with Christine with her hood up, walking down the street – that she thought about all the wee women that were on their own and desperately hoping their family would be in touch at that time of year.”

Writer Simon Carlyle was crying after the scene ended.

“He said ‘something very different has happened to this series today. It was such a great episode and I’m so very proud of it for all of us’.”

Simon’s death in 2023 at the age of 48 meant the future of the whole show was uncertain. But the team reassembled for a Christmas special in 2025, which paved the way for an upcoming eighth series.

A photo on the Baird’s stage sideboard will be barely visible to the 10,000 fans who will watch the live show over the ten live shows, but he’ll never be forgotten as long as the neighbours are round in Latimer Crescent.

“Simon had a real desire for us to do a stage show and it was often talked about,” says Elaine.

“It feels like a real tribute to Simon. I hope people won’t be disappointed, I don’t think they will.”

Two Doors Down is at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow from Friday 25 September to Sunday 27 September and from Friday 9 October to Sunday 11 October.
