‘Batman: Caped Crusader’: Ranking the Supervillains Teased for Season 2

Bang! Pow! Gotham returns to our screens on July 31 with the Season 2 premiere of Batman: Caped Crusader on Prime Video

In Season 1, Batman (Hamish Linklater) squared up against iconic villains like The Penguin (Minnie Driver), Clayface (Dan Donahue), Catwoman (Christina Ricci), and Two-Face (Diedrich Bader), along with lesser-known evildoers such as Firebug (Tom Kenny), the Gentleman Ghost (Toby Stephens), Nocturna (Mckenna Grace), and King Tut (David Krumholtz). Besides throwbacks to the comics, Season 1 also featured other well-known DC characters like Dick Grayson (voiced by Carter Rockwood) — we later know Dick as one of the Robins, and even later, as Nightwing — and the Daily Planet‘s Lois Lane (Grey DeLisle).

With so many references to the DC comics packed into one season, it’s no surprise that when the official trailer for Season 2 released on June 24, we were watching with a keen eye to see if we could recognize any new and old additions to the cast

Boy, did we find them. The trailer is head-to-toe packed with new foes Batman will be up against, and we can’t wait to see how the Dark Knight will prevail. Scroll down to check out our ranking of all the supervillains we could catch in the trailer (which you can watch below)!

Batman: Caped Crusader, Season 2, Friday, July 31, Prime Video

A first look at Harley Quinn in season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    10. Harley Quinn After her fall off a cliff in the Season 1 episode “The Stress of Her Regard,” we thought we’d seen the last of Dr. Harleen Quinzel (Jamie Chung). In true fashion, she always pops up when you least expect her to. This time, the therapist is back to tell off Bruce Wayne, saying in the trailer that “sane people don’t dress up like bats and do detective work for free.” We wonder what Freud would think of this psychoanalysis, as well as her role this season as a potential moral compass.
Solomon Grundy in season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    9. Solomon Grundy One shot in the trailer shows an undead man with skull-shaped pupils walking down a snowy Gotham street. Fans quickly theorized that this figure must be Solomon Grundy, who first appeared in the 1944 comic All-American Comics #61. This zombie was originally introduced as a Green Lantern villain but has come to terrorize the streets of many other DC heroes, including Batman and Superman. With superhuman strength and the ability to come back from the dead, it will be worth wondering how Batman will tackle this formidable foe.
Roxy Rocket firing a gun in season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    8. Roxy Rocket What if Iron Man used his flying suit and daredevil attitude for crime instead of good? Then you’d have stuntwoman Roxy Rocket, who first made her Batman premiere in Season 2 of The New Batman Adventures back in 1998 when she was voiced by Charity James. She returns to the small screen in Batman: Caped Crusader; in the trailer, she takes off in an armored flying jet suit reminiscent of Iron Man’s Model 01 suit, which debuted in the 1963 Marvel comic Tales of Suspense #39.
The Monk/The Mad Monk in season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    7. The Monk The Monk, who first appeared in Detective Comics #31 (1939), is the second Batman villain ever introduced. This vampire can be seen in the trailer for Caped Crusader Season 2, rallying an army against Batman. In this new version of his outfit, his signature red hood and cloak are styled more similarly to Batman’s, with two ears sticking out from the cowl and a yellow bat symbol on his chest. It’s fitting that the Monk takes on the stylings of his nemesis, given that vampires often turn into bats.
Man-Bat in season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    6. Man-Bat A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but for a split second after a shot of Batman punching the Riddler, the mutated creature Man-Bat claws at the screen. Having first appeared in 1970’s Detective Comics #400, Man-Bat is the product of scientist Dr. Kirk Langstrom testing himself with a serum extracted from bats. Man-Bat can transform from human to bat humanoid, a fitting addition to the slate of supernatural supervillains that Season 2 brings.
The Mad Hatter in Season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    5. Mad Hatter The supervillain Mad Hatter terrorized Gotham with his technological mind-control abilities ever since his debut in 1948’s Batman #49. In the trailer for Batman: Caped Crusader, the Mad Hatter (Laraine Newman) appears in a genderbent form, using her television show “Hattie’s Tea Party” to publicly cast doubt on Batman’s claim of safety for Gotham. Upgrading the Mad Hatter’s hypnosis tech to television will be an interesting era-specific development for the character and brings to light tons of different opportunities for her to conduct mass-brainwashings on Gotham.
The Scarecrow stands in a burning room in season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    4. Scarecrow The Scarecrow’s only scene in the trailer for Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 is of him silently standing in front of a burning room. Instead of his typical ragged burlap attire, he is dressed in a classy trenchcoat and suit. But make no mistake, the chill that runs down your spine is just like if he had hit you with his fear gas. The Scarecrow has appeared in many a Batman adaptation, from TV shows to video games and movies, but his most popular iteration is hands-down when he was portrayed by Academy-Award winner Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy.
Poison Ivy in season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    3. Poison Ivy DC Comics columnist Alex Jaffe credits Season 2 of Harley Quinn for finally canonizing HarlIvy (Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy) back in 2020, with the two characters together ever since. Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 instead pairs Poison Ivy with the Riddler in a Bonnie-and-Clyde outlaw dynamic. In one scene from the trailer, the two kiss while the background explodes. Poison Ivy is, no doubt, a formidable foe on her own, but it will be interesting to see how her powers will work in tandem with the next villain on our list.
The Riddler mid-heist in season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    2. The Riddler Riddle me this, reader: What do you get when one of Batman’s longest-standing Golden Age villains returns to Gotham? We’re not sure, but it’s probably nothing good. The Riddler is poised to be one of the primary antagonists of the season, hell-bent on taking Batman down so “Gotham can be ours.” In the trailer, he appears as your standard trigger-happy villain, even leaving behind a question mark out of bullet holes at one crime scene. We’re sure the show is just saving all the juicy puzzles for the premiere. It’s no fun when the mystery immediately gets solved.
The Joker in season 2 of Prime Video's "Batman: Caped Crusader"
    Prime Video
    1. The Joker What is Batman without the Joker? Batman’s greatest enemy has appeared in the series before — in the Season 1 finale, he is seen experimenting with a serum that makes his enemies die laughing with a smile on their faces. This iteration of Joker, with a deep, menacing voice and face shrouded in shadows, is a stark contrast from the characterization we’re more used to: an over-the-top maniacally laughing madman who loves the spotlight and inflicting pain on Gothamites. This new darker take on the Joker will surely to be a refreshing watch, especially as he becomes a bigger player in Gotham City this season.
