Today marks the birth anniversary of legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle. Looking back at the musical icon’s illustrious career, one finds countless immortal songs that have continued to captivate listeners across generations.

An artiste who cannot be confined to a particular genre or era, she has sung romantic songs, dance numbers, ghazals and songs rooted in classical traditions. At other times, her voice has conveyed the profound melancholy of life. In every genre, she carved out an identity of her own.

Perhaps the greatest strength of Asha Bhosle’s voice has been its youthful quality. Music has evolved, and recording technology has changed, but her voice still mesmerises listeners. Several generations have grown up listening to her songs. Tastes have changed, and generations have moved on, but her music has never faded.

Born on September 8, 1933, Asha Bhosle recorded her first song for a Marathi film at the age of 10. Initially known primarily for dance numbers and light music, she later achieved equal acclaim for ghazals and classical music.

On the occasion of the singer’s birth anniversary, a new song, “Ae Meri Zindagi, Tu Chhupi Hai Kahan”, will be released today. The song was recorded towards the end of 2013 for a film directed by Harish Vyas.
