‘Anime Magazine Covers’ is a service that allows you to view the covers (book images) of the three major anime magazines, ‘Animage,’ ‘Animedia,’ and ‘Monthly Newtype,’ from their first issues onwards.

    Anime Magazine Covers

While there have been many anime information magazines in the past, the representative magazines that have continued publication until 2026 are limited to three: Tokuma Shoten’s ‘Animage,’ Gakken’s ‘Animedia,’ and KADOKAWA’s ‘Newtype.’ ‘Anime Magazine Covers’ allows you to see the covers of each magazine from their inaugural issues up to the September 2025 issue at the time of writing.

The pages are arranged from newest to oldest at the top and oldest at the bottom. From left to right, they are Newtype, Animedia, and Animage.

For example, the September issue, released in August 2025, looks like this. Newtype features ‘My Dress-Up Darling’ on its cover, while Animedia and Animage feature ‘Let’s Go to Karaoke!’.

Only Newtype magazine sometimes features Mamoru Nagano’s serialized manga ‘The Five Star Stories’ on its cover.

According to Shinichiro Inoue, who has been involved with the magazine since its inception, Mr. Nagano is at the core of the magazine, and the fact that ‘Newtype is Mamoru Nagano’s magazine’ has remained unchanged.

These days, with the sheer volume of anime releases, it’s relatively rare for three magazines to feature the same anime on their covers in the same month. However, it does happen with highly anticipated titles. For example, in March 2024, all three magazines featured ‘Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM’ on their covers.

August 2023 will feature ‘Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch of Mercury’.

April 2022 is packed with spectacular releases, including ‘Demon Slayer: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Entertainment District Arc’.

Animedia changed its size to A4 wide starting with the April 2010 issue, and the cover image was slightly smaller until the March 2010 issue.

As it is an anime magazine, the cover usually features anime artwork, but the February 1998 issue of Animage features director Hideaki Anno and the cast of his live-action film ‘Love & Pop’ on the cover to coincide with the film’s release.

Furthermore, at Machi★Asobi Vol.7, held in October 2011, a valuable exhibition was held where visitors could actually pick up and read back issues of Animage and Animedia magazines.

From Nausicaä to K-On!, the Animage & Animedia exhibition offers a firsthand look at the history of anime – GIGAZINE

Also, while ‘Anime Magazine Covers’ only includes the front cover, GIGAZINE has previously published articles that included information on the back cover and spine, so please check those out as well.
