If you’ve logged into Anime Expeditions in the last couple weeks, you’ve no doubt heard all the talk about my boy, the Dark Mage. While this unit, based on Judar from Magi: The Labyrinth Of Magic, was never intended to be the most powerful unit in the Villains update, it didn’t take long for players to realise he was slightly broken, dealing huge damage with a godlike passive that we’re all praying won’t be nerfed. If you want to see what all the hype is about, below, we’ve put together a Dark Mage build guide so you can get maximum efficiency out of his moveset.

How to evolve Dark Mage to Dark Mage (Sovereign)

The first thing you’re going to want to do before putting together any form of a Dark Mage build is to upgrade him to his evolved form, Dark Mage (Sovereign). To do that, roll a Dark Mage, then head to the Evolve station in the Upgrades Chamber and trade in these re

    • 1x Magical Amulet
    • 20x Sprite (Red)
    • 20x Sprite (Yellow)
    • 1x Sprite (Rainbow)
    • 10,000 Gold

Once you’ve traded all those in, you’ll unlock Dark Mage (Sovereign).

    Best Dark Mage build

With Dark Mage now in his ultimate form, we need to construct a build to complement it. To give you a little insight into why Dark Mage is the talk of the town, it’s all down to his Sovereign form’s passive ability, Lightning Orbs. It essentially lets him lay lightning down on any sections of the track inside his circle of range. Any enemy standing in that lightning will take damage per second equivalent to 25% of Dark Mage’s overall current DPS, and considering he does big damage regardless, that can melt enemies almost instantly.

As a result, we want to pump the living hell out of Dark Mage’s DPS, so with that in mind, here’s a solid build that will make him an absolute weapon:

    Trait Unbound
    Unit Equipment Dark Scepter
    Equipment Magic Book
    Shinigami Sword/Three Swords From Hell

Best team comps for Dark Mage

When assembling a crew to accompany the Dark Mage, you need to think about how best to support this Lightning Orbs passive. Largely, that means you should stock up on at least one unit that can slow enemies. They’ll be your best friend when using Dark Mage, as they’ll force foes to stick around in his lightning traps for longer.

Alongside that, a good magic buff will help to keep Dark Mage’s DPS high, and it’s wise to have a support DPS on standby to deal some extra damage while Dark Mage’s putting in the work. We’ve assembled our recommended team comp below:

    • Support DPS: 8th Sword (Potential sub-ins: Elf Mage)
    • Slow: Puppet and Salmon Sorcerer (Potential sub-ins: String Demon)
    • Magic buff: Shadow (Potential sub-ins: Forbidden Teacher)

We’ve purposefully left the sixth slot free for you to add whatever you feel the team is missing in a certain mission. I’d suggest maybe bringing a Coin Farm like Ramen Guy to drum up funds and upgrade Dark Mage quickly.

How to get Dark Mage in Anime Expeditions

To actually get your hands on Dark Mage, you’ll need to venture to the Summon chamber and switch over to the Villian Banner. Dark Mage is one of the banner’s four Mythic units, which means you’ll have a 0.25% chance of getting him with each pull.

To pull on the Banner, you’ll need Villain coins, which are mostly earned from Villain chests, which you secure by defeating bosses that spawn while in levels. You can also earn them through the Villain Banner Event and codes. If you need some quick, be sure to check out our Anime Expeditions codes page.

And that’s all you need to know to construct a truly powerful Dark Mage build. Make sure to exploit his talents before he’s inevitably patched! In the meantime, we have plenty more Anime Expeditions guides to check out, including a full Anime Expeditions tier list, a build guide for Crow (Itachi) and a walkthrough on rerolling equipment. If none of that appeals though, you can find our full list of Roblox guides here.
